3 Ways to Decorate with Vintage Watering Cans in the Kitchen

Ann Siper
Retro water cans are the perfect way to decorate a vintage kitchen on a small budget. You can use vintage watering cans from the local flea market and repurpose them in a variety of ways to decorate your shabby chic kitchen.

Here are 3 ways to use vintage watering cans in the kitchen:

Vintage Watering Can Décor #1:Curtain Tie Backs

Small vintage watering cans make awesome curtain ties backs. You need to use the small plastic water cans in vintage colors or the mini retro looking watering cans that are simply reproductions.

First install a hook on the left and right side of the window frame. Now, use the hook to hold back your curtains. In front of the hook you can us floral wire to tie the vintage water cans onto the hook. This will make them float in front of the curtains and give the appearance they are holding the curtains back.

Vintage Watering Can Décor #2: Lamp Base

I love putting a lamp in the kitchen on the counter. The accent light adds a warm touch to any kitchen on a small budget. Plus you get that awesome retro look.

You can quickly and easily turn a vintage watering can into a lamp in seconds and apply no damage to the can. To do this you want to look for basket light kits. These are meant to clamp onto the handle of the basket.

In your case though you will want to clap this onto the handle of the vintage watering can. See, no wiring, no damage, and no fuss! You can buy basket lamp kits online, just search those key words you can also check your local craft store.

These lamp kits cost about $5 and can be reused once you change the look in your kitchen.

Vintage Watering Can Décor #3: Vases

Finally, a super quick way to decorate a retro kitchen with watering cans is to use them as a vase or planter. I like to slip in a plastic cylinder into the vintage watering can and make sure it is hidden inside. Fill the cup with water.

Now, slide in some flowers. The small cup holds the stems of the flowers and keeps you from having to buy a ton to fill up the watering can. It also keeps you from having to fill the watering can with water, which if your piece is old and rusty you will not want to do!

This can be placed on the counter in front of a window and really add a fun retro touch to your vintage kitchen.
