People take their lawns for granted expecting that year after year it will just be there and look exactly how they want it. What most people forget is that their lawn is made up of hundreds and hundreds of small plants. If you had any type of house plant and you ignored it all year round except to occasionally cut it back, would it survive? Of course not! Plants require attention and some care in order to thrive. Here are 3 ways to help your small plants, I mean grass, thrive and give you the perfect lawn that you want.
Fertilizing
Believe it or not, it actually takes over eighteen elements for your grass to grow. These elements come from air, water as well as from the soil itself. Each element provides something different that makes the grass grow and become contain the desirable lawn qualities that most people want. Environmental conditions often stop your grass from getting the elements it needs and therefore causes it to be limited in its growth in one way or another.
To help your lawn achieve its maximum growth, you should always provide fertilizer for your lawns in the early growing season once you start seeing new growth so that it has what it needs to thrive.
Reseeding
While grass does spread out, weeds spread out faster and will choke the growth of new grass seeds. If you have empty spots in your lawn, fill them with grass seeds in the fall and make sure to properly water them. To have a thick lawn, you should get in the habit of reseeding your entire lawn in the early fall. This is best time as the sun will not be as direct and usually more rain will fall to help with the watering.
As there are many types of grass, make sure you understand what kind you have and get that type of seed to keep a uniform look across the yard.
Proper Mowing
Everyone with a lawn is used to going out and mowing when needed, however, there are many ways that you could be damaging your lawn when you mow. In order for your lawn to properly grow for example, make sure to never cut more than one-third the height of the grass at any time. If you cut lower, you could expose your grass roots to too much sun causing it die.
Some other tips for proper mowing include only mowing when your grass is dry, mow only with a sharp blade and make sure to rinse off your mower after each use as it could spread lawn disease when you use it next.
Growing the perfect lawn does not happen over night or even in one year. It takes time and many growing seasons for the effects of proper treatment to help your lawn thrive and be where you want it to be. So be patient, be consistent and before you know it, you will have the lawn that other people envy!
