Recycled wood headboards can be used in a variety of ways throughout your home. Almost any type of wood headboard can be upcycled into a new use. Throughout this article you will find a variety of ideas for using different styles of headboards. Hopefully these ideas will inspire you to recycle your old furniture into something new.

Recycled Wood Headboard Idea #1

If you have a solid real wood headboard and footboard with posts at each corner a great way to reuse it is to turn it into a bench. This will require the addition of some extra wood, but the main body of the headboard should be able to make a great custom bench.

Use the headboard of the set to be the back of the wood bench. Take the footboard and cut it in half. This will create two arm pieces for the bench. These can be screwed into place from the backside of the headboard. Screw the cut edges to the headboard and have the posts as the front.

Measure the size of the rectangle space you will need for the bench seat. Build this out of 2X4s. You will need to screw this into place based on your individual headboard. A sheet of plywood cut to size can be laid on top to create the seat.

Recycled Wood Headboard Idea #2

If you have a wood headboard that is a solid piece of flat wood then turning it into a coffee table or dining room table is a fun option. A flat surface works best. If you have a solid wood headboard that has carved detail in it you can build the table, but add on a sheet of glass on top to create a smooth surface.

Basically you want to cut off the legs or any other piece of the headboard that stick out and would prevent it from being a flat surface. Sand down these rough edges. Buy some premade coffee table legs or dining table legs. These can be screwed onto the headboard to create a table at a height you need.

Recycled Wood Headboard Idea #3

Turning a headboard into free wall art is a fun idea for any room in the house. This idea will vary depending on your headboard. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

If you have a solid flat surface wood headboard why not take the piece and use a jig saw to cut it down into squares. These wood squares are perfect to paint on, add a collage on, or even cover in fabric. Hang on the wall when finished.

If you have a slatted wood headboard then use this as a way to display art. Cut off the legs if needed on your headboard. Sand the rough edges and paint out the headboard to hide any cut edges.

You can slide photos in between the slats if they are close enough together to hold items. If no try adding clothes pins. You can clip them to the slats and add photos, artwork, and more.

Great ideas! I once used a fancy scrollwork headboard as decoration in my flower garden. Someone had left it on the side of the road and I knew there had to be another use for it.
