3 Ways to Reuse Leftover Rice
The 1st Way: Make delicious rice ball snacks. My mom occasionally rolled balls of old rice, mixed it with some salt, and rolled into small balls with her hands for us to eat. Sometimes she sprinkled it with toasted sesame seeds.
This was her version of an after school snack. Although she used very few ingredients, it was surprisingly delicious. Better yet, it doesn't have numerous additives or chemicals like in most kids' snacks. The only additives to this snack are salt and sesame seeds, used sparsely. It's easy to make and takes minutes to do.
I recommend keeping a few napkins nearby, however, since the rice can stick to your fingers.
The 2nd Way: Make instant glue. It helps if the leftover rice is soft, not hard. Squish each grain with your fingers and stick it where needed. The rice instantly sticks to anything, naturally.
This type of glue isn't filled with unnecessary chemicals either. It's just old, leftover rice and a pinch of water.
The 3rd Way: Fry the leftover rice with eggs and soy sauce. This was another treat my mom often made when I was a child, and I absolutely loved it. Throw in the leftover rice, a large egg, and a sprinkling of soy sauce into a bowl, mix quickly, and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. The smell will make your mouth water.
If microwaving isn't your thing, you can make an extra crispy version by using your fry pan. Thinly coat a medium sized fry pan with olive oil, set the heat to medium high, and throw in the mixture. Stir occasionally until it is warm and slightly browned.
This treat is perfect for breakfast when you don't have time to make a traditional American meal. It's very filling too.
Of course there are other ways to reuse leftover rice, but these three suggestions will make your kids happy too. Don't be afraid to experiment with these ideas to make it appetizing for you.

Post a CommentFried rice, rice balls, sticky rice, rice pudding...I love rice.
Eggs, rice and soy sauce was my favorite meal when I was a kid.
If it was left up to me, I'd eat Thai or Chinese food every single day. I had a Japanese friend who would make food I'd just about stalk her for. I don't recall ever letting rice go bad. Brown rice, yellow rice, white rice. I could live off of rice. But these are great tips for those times I make too much rice. I like the glue one. The third one I can't deal with since I hate eggs. The smell of them make me want to vomit. When I get vegetable fried rice, I specifically ask for no eggs. The yellow, I love. But egg whites (the healthy part), can't stand it!
Great article. As an Asian person, rice is the ultimate food staple. Whenever I finished cooking some meat on a pan, like beef or chicken, I use the leftover meat stock to fry the rice. I do that instead of using soy sauce.
I use leftover rice in soup. If we have a ton left over from take out or from a previous meal that week, I make up a batch of chicken and rice soup. Just toss the rice in a few minutes before serving to warm it up.
Great ideas, Ann! I've always wondered what to do with leftover rice, and now I finally have some options! Thanks :)
Ooh I'll try the microwave with soy sauce and egg option, that sounds delicious. I too love rice and, thankfully, live in a country where it comes with everything, LOL.
Great suggestions! I always throw out left over rice when it gets too hard; I'm going to have to try these suggestions next time.
We eat a lot of rice. Loved your suggestions.
I love fried rice! I never knew until recently that leftover rice is actually preferred for fried rice, I guess since it dries out a bit :)
