What is Solar Power?
Solar power and solar energy are two terms that can be used interchangeably. They both mean to receive energy from the Sun and use that energy in a way that can be transformed into electricity and other power sources. While we tend to rely on other natural resources, many believe that solar power is the best source because it does not emit unwanted emissions in the air, and it is endlessly plentiful - so plentiful in fact that in just one hour it could meet the world's demand for energy for an entire year!
There are two ways to utilize solar power - as a heating source and as an energy source. When you use solar power as a heating source, it can heat homes, head and distill water, cook food, ventilate and disinfect. As an energy source, it is used as a form of electricity. At present moment, almost 10,000 Americans receive their electricity from solar energy in a process that is called photovaltaics, which is the process of converting light into electricity. Though measures were taken in the not-to-distant past to begin to standardize this form of electricity, a sudden drop in oil prices helped the efforts fizzle out.
How You Can Utilize Solar Power
So now that you know what solar power is and how it can benefit your life, you are probably wondering in what ways you can bring this form of energy into your world.
Solar Lighting - Since approximately 25 percent of the electricity being used in the United States is for lighting homes, it is no wonder that many people are turning to solar lighting as a way to cut down their electricity costs. What is solar lighting, exactly? The most popular form, aside from photovaltaics, is to simply open your drapes and blinds. Of course, this is a common sense answer. But there are other ways to get more sunlight into the home. Some architects are developing homes that have unique window orientations so that more light can enter. Also, you may be able to purchase light tubes that help to emit more light beams.
Solar Paneling - In addition to making cosmetic adjustments to their homes to emit more natural sunlight, many homeowners are placing solar panels on their homes as a way to generate electricity. This option, though not very inexpensive in its initial costs, is very cost efficient in the long-run, and also helps to reduce tons of carbon dioxide that gets emitted into the air.
Solar-Powered Cars - Driving a solar-powered car is the third way that you can get involved with solar energy - and save yourself tons of money in gas costs. A solar-powered car uses the same solar panels that are found on homes. The energy from the Sun is converted into electrical energy, which can power the car for hundreds of miles before a recharge is needed.
By taking one or more of the above steps to solar power your world, you will not only be removing yourself from long-term financial strain, but also helping to make the world a greener place.
