3 Ways to Turn a New Clutch into a Granny Chic Clutch

Ann Siper
Granny chic clutches are the hottest purse trend this year. You don't have to scour the flea markets and ebay to find great granny chic clutches. You can take new clutches from your favorite store or pieces from your collection and turn them into retro clutches that will have everyone looking.

Granny Chic Clutch Transformations #1: Buttons

One of the best ways to change the look of an existing clutch is to add a fun retro button or vintage button to the front of the purse. You can look for old buttons at Goodwill, the flea market, online, and at local antique stores.

Try adding one large button to the front top panel of the clutch. You can sew this on with matching thread and a needle and have a whole new vintage look in no time.

Granny Chic Clutch Transformations #2: Silk Flowers

Adding silk flowers, retro looking flowers, to the font of the purse is also a fun idea. I like to simple create a daisy pin or flower pin. Take silk flowers from the craft store, like a daisy or Gerber daisy and stitch them onto a pin backing.

Use matching thread if possible now, you can pin this daisy on to the front of your clutch to give it a shabby chic look. You can also wear the daisy pin on a accept later.

Granny Chic Clutch Transformations #3: Yo Yos

Ok, these are not the toy that kids play with. Yo yos are around pleated piece of fabric that were super popular in the first few decades of he 1900's. You can find easy yo yo instructions on line to make cute pleated circles out of any kind of retro looking fabric.

Try to use small scraps of vintage feedsack, retro dishtowels, or any shabby chic fabric you like.

Once you have made your yo yo's form the fabric you can sew them in a row on the top line of the front of the clutch! You can also sew them to pins and pin them on. This way you can turn you granny chic clutch back into a more modern piece to wear another day.

Tip, try making small yo yo's form fabric. Create that line on the top edge of the clutch to make a real granny chic statement. You can also make one simple large yo yo from retro fabric and place it slightly off center on the front of your clutch!
