300 Weatherby Magnum

Raw Power

Since 1948 Weatherby has made ammunition available to the public consumer. During World War 2 Roy Weatherby blew out the full length 300 H&H case to give a minimum body taper, Weatherby also added in the double radius shoulder, characteristic or his designs. Weatherby had just created the 300 Weatherby Magnum, little did he know how popular it was going to be. The 300 Weatherby Magnum was the first successful improvement, commercially, on the 300 H&H cartridge. In recent years all major manufacturers of rifles have produced products chambered in the 300 Weatherby Magnum. Now all most major ammunition manufacturers have included the 300 Weatherby Magnum in their list of factory loaded ammunition.

The 300 Weatherby Magnum lives up to the "Magnum" legend, sending a 180 grain bullet at 3100 feet per second down range is no small feat. With these velocities and sizes many hunters have taken down some very large game. Although there have been reports of using the 300 Weatherby Magnum for elephant hunting, I would though at this time make note that this practice is not endorsed by any sane human. The 300 Weatherby is a very powerful cartridge and boasts some pretty impressive numbers all around in testing. The 300 Weatherby Magnum is very accurate and permits some very impressive very long shots. In North America it permits the hunters to make some very graceful long distance kills on most American game, it has also received a lot of popularity in the African plains were many shots are long distance, and the animals are tough. Truthfully, I would not want to be caught on the African plains staring down a large toothed animal without something like the 300 Weatherby Magnum, this is probably a good reason why it is such a popular round for African plains.

The 300 Weatherby Magnum also has proven vary proficient at killing American deer, although sometimes thought to be too powerful for taking deer, it handles the job perfectly. With its high bullet grain the meat damage seems to be minimal unlike some other loads of 150 grains. The 300 Weatherby Magnum is no stranger to larger game either, although the cartridge may be a bit weak to take down a charging bruin, many a bear have been taken down in a pinch. Usually heavier cartridges are used for bear in America, but the 300 Weatherby Magnum has proved it can handle this job without worry. The 300 Weatherby Magnum has also received some attention due to its ability to take down elk and moose without anything but a blink of an eye, a skilled shooter will find that the elk and moose fall fast when faced with the 300 Weatherby Magnum.

With the sheer power the 300 Weatherby Magnum provides, it will remain one of the toughest hunting loads available to hunters. Many a cartridge may boast bigger bullets or faster velocities, but few will offer the same ratio of power, speed, and accuracy. The 300 Weatherby Magnum will live on for many years to come, especially with reloaders and custom rifles still available.
