The 30th annual New River Gorge Bridge Day occurs on October 17, 2009. Bridge Day in West Virginia has become a tradition over the last couple of decades. People come from all over the world to BASE jump, rappel and highline off the second longest single-arch bridge in the world. Registered jumpers have six-hours to make as many jumps as they want to off the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The New River Gorge Bridge on Route 19 is an amazing structure all in itself that is roughly 3,030 feet long constructed out of approximately 88 million pounds of steel. The New River Gorge Bridge is 70 feet in width and over 876 feet tall from the New River below. So you can see the adrenaline rush that the New River Gorge Bridge brings to those jumpers that sign up and participate.

The attendance average for Bridge Day in West Virginia is between 70,000 to 80,000 every year. There are numerous events that is related to Bridge Day in surrounding towns such as Oak Hill, Fayetteville and Montgomery, West Virginia. Fayetteville has a big chili cook-off from 4 -7 p.m. Montgomery is have Oktoberfest and a Chili cook-off downtown from 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. There will be numerous musicians playing as well.

Another great adventure during this time is Whitewater rafting on the New River as well. Bridge Day weekend is truly an adrenaline rush for that outdoor enthusiast. The New River has some of the best rapids in the world. Also, the Gauley River is another close attraction for whitewater rafting in West Virginia. If you truly want a thrill you should ride the Gauley while they open Summersville Dam because you'll have a blast.

Bridge Day 2009 in West Virginia is truly a remarkable event as spectators can walk on the bridge during the six-hour period between 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. Come and watch those crazy BASE jumpers fly into the New River Gorge. There's always some rough landings and people getting caught in the New River below. Standing on the New River Gorge Bridge is an event all on its own because the wind cuts across the New River Gorge and it makes the bridge appear to be swaying.
