The collection has a strong 60's British rock and roll influence. Even down to the bubble wigs that the models were wearing, each detail is carefully planned to evoke a rock and roll style. But it doesn't stop there. One piece features a beautiful taupe dress with a layer of sheer black tulle fabric covering it. This gives it a peekaboo effect. But the outfit is paired with an off-white "Sgt. Pepper's" style band jacket that features metal details. What would have been a beautiful dress under anyone else's collection suddenly becomes a unique, artistic display of how to blend different elements to create your own style.
Another outfit blends the British rock with Asian influences. On a brownish-grey jacket that looks like it is made of silk, the top half is straight out of the photos you see of Saville Row suits. It features a double-breasted style and a perfect collar. But the bottom of the jacket continues down and flares very slightly. Some stripes and mums form the print, with small mums at the hips, and larger mums close to knee level. Paired with a delicate, flowy dress underneath, it's a perfect look.
Finally, the women's pants seem to be a real highlight of the collection. One pair is made of shiny striped yellow and black fabric. There is a diagonal seam that runs across the thighs, and it evokes the idea of bell-bottom pants, without resorting to bell-bottoms. It's a new, fresh, updated take on it. Another pair features a print that resembles charred tree bark. The prints are imaginative, but not overpowering.
3.1 Phillip Lim is definitely a label to watch, and if this is any indication of the level of talent we can expect to see over the next few decades, then we are in for many more beautiful clothes to come. It's a smart, instantly classic look.
