Mountainair, NM 87036
United States of America
You will have to create your own fireworks this 4th of July in Mountainair. With the drought and high fire risk, the Town of Mountainair has banned all fireworks within city limits. The Mountainair's 36th Annual Firecracker Jubilee will continue without the normal fireworks.
This year the Jubilee kicks off with a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament over at the Shaffer Hotel. There are two beautiful jewelry items to win in the tournament on Friday night. Tickets are available and all proceeds go to charity. Mountainair's B-Street Market is co-sponsoring a "Best Pie" and "Best Chili" contest this year. The pie and chili contest will start at 5 pm on Friday at the Robert J. Saul Community Center. There is a $20 entry fee. Proceeds from both events will go to the MPS "Battle of the Books" program.
Saturday July second starts off with a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 am at the Senior Citizens Center. At 10:00, line up along Highway 60 to watch the annual parade. Be sure to swing by the Salinas Pueblo National Monument to check out their 3rd Annual Car show. After the parade you should head on up to the park. You will find vendors, a horseshoe tournament and Barbeque as well as most of the residents of the area. There is a ghost chili eating contest, mud tug-a-war, a dunking booth and a horse shoe tournament.
Keep in mind that the annual meeting for Mountainair High School reunion will also be taking place. Catch up with your classmates and see what everyone has been up to.
The annual dance will be held up at the tennis courts of the Chavez Memorial Park on the north side of town starting at 8:00 pm.
If you survive all the fun of Friday and Saturday, head back to the Shaffer Hotel on Sunday at 2:00 for the first of two performances of the Single Action Shooting Society. They have a special re-enactment set up and will perform again at 4:00.
The drought may have canceled the fireworks this year, but it can never cancel the fun.
