Your first step is to really become familiar with the overall software that is used. This includes applications such as Maya, 3DS Max, Mudbox, and more. These are all programs that are quite pricey; however, there are a few ways to get cheaper copies, such as the usage of an educational license if you are a student or a teacher. In order to really get the experience that you need, you will not only need to know these powerful pieces of software and what they are capable of doing, but you will need to know at least the basics in their operation.
For example, software such as Maya has been developed over many years and in its previous form before Autodesk purchased the company that developed Maya it was used for movies such as Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This proves that the software is capable of producing amazing effects and touches, but only in the hands of someone who actually knows how to use it.
In order to really get a firm grasp on the 3D graphics industry you will probably need to invest in classes as well. Typically speaking at least working towards an associates degree will be well worth your time, as well as efforts. Most major studios however are going to want at least a college degree, unless you can demonstrate absolutely exceptional skills in the field that lets them set aside any typical hiring practices that they might have.
It is very important to realize that most people simply cannot afford to actually purchase the best high-end 3D graphics software. With prices ranging from $2,000USD to as much as $5,000USD for a single application, most people are simply unable to afford this. If you find yourself in this situation, this is where an educational license as well as a suitable school program can help you to overcome this limitation.
Remember, behind each blockbuster movie is a crew that has worked for countless days, weeks, months and even years to perfect and hone their skills. Learning as much as you possibly can before you start trying to move to Hollywood will help you to increase the chances of success working on movies, or even allow you to branch off into other areas of 3D graphics design that you may enjoy.
