A 3D scanner has various different uses, the most important one being the ability to create a 3D image of any object on the screen of the computer, when placed under the scanner. Moreover it is very simple to use, making it a most often used accessory by various spheres of businesses. Even history, when viewed with the 3D scanner takes on a new and appealing look.

Many research units have 3D scanners for purposes of researching the various artworks. Two studies have been conducted with the help of 3D scanners. Statues in the Medici Chapel like 'David', 'Prigioni' and four other pieces of Michelangelo were scanned. With the help of the scanners, exact small sized replicas can be made which is of tremendous use for study purposes.

The scanning of the Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is another noted event, where the scanner was used to form a virtual Thomas Jefferson display. The display consisted of a window and had the effect of someone actually peeping into the Thomas Jefferson library. A rear projection exhibit was focused on to a wall and one can view the display with the help of stereo glasses. The view through the glasses was very real and it looked as if the viewer could actually touch the objects in the library. Someone seeing through these glasses felt like it was the real library and they were in fact, inside it.

Another area where the 3D scanner has been used is in the study of cuneiform tablets. With the aid of the scanners, these tablets can be easily deciphered. The tablets are very delicate and should be handled very carefully, so to avoid any harm to these tablets a 3D image of them was formed. This made studying them easier for the students, without harming the original objects. In fact those involved in study of artifacts, find the 3D scanner an extremely useful invention as they can conduct a thorough study of an artifact without handling the real one. The ancient pieces of art can be replicated and put to use by people from all over the world and this leads to a better perception of the artistic creations and thereby educating a wider range of people which is otherwise not possible.

You can make your own replica or 3D image with the scanner of any object that has historical significance. You have to get prior approval from the authorities concerned but it is a very simple process. Also the use of 3D scanner is very simple to use and also it is very economical. With a 3D scanner in hand, you can do a lot of things that you fancy like, making movies, modeling objects and getting to know more about certain artistic pieces that you were dying to know, very easily and effectively too.
