3-Step Job Search Strategy

At the International Career Development conference several years ago, I had the good fortune to hear Richard Bolles, author of What Color is your Parachute, speak to the value of a good job search strategy to help people land the job or career they want. Many job hunters think that a job search strategy has to be complicated. It does not. This simple 3-step job search strategy is a way to get started.

Job Search Strategy Step #1 - Self Evaluation

The tendency is great when unemployed to say, "I'll take anything or any job." of course that may be the necessary thing to do and everyone has to respect that. However, after you have taken a job to make ends meet, consider getting serious about a job search strategy to make the next career move. In the self-evaluation step, spend time identifying interest, skills, values, personality and abilities. Consider the kind of workplace environment where you really want to work. Honest self-evaluation is a key step in developing an effective job search strategy.

Job Search Strategy Step #2 - Create job search communication including resumes and cover letters

Honest self evaluation to identify interests, skills, values, personality and abilities is the first step to resume development. Without knowing who you are and what you have to offer, resumes and cover letters can be empty documents with lists of jobs and dates. You want your resume and cover letter to do more. You want your resume and cover letter to spotlight and sell YOU.

Job Search Strategy Step #3 - Put YOU out there

As effective as the Internet and social networking have been in revolutionizing the job search, job seekers should still actively network and meet people face to face at career events like job fairs, meet-ups or local job clubs. This step in the job search strategy includes doing company research, preparing for career events and learning how to follow up. It also involves knowing how to put the best YOU forward in a job interview.
