1. Go to church. There are some fine examples of architecture, free for the looking, at Manhattan's beautiful churches. St. Patrick's (5th Avenue and 51st, across from Rockefeller Center) offers a stunning example of Gothic architecture. It's best to approach St. Patrick's from across the street, though, so that you can get the full effect as you approach. St. Bart's (Park Avenue and 50th) in another architectural gem in New York. However, it features Byzantine style architecture. Go in the afternoon and listen to the organ practice. Finally, the Little Church Around the Corner (on 29th between 5th and Madison avenues) offers an interesting free stop on a tour of Manhattan. This church's stained glass windows are exquisite, and this church has strong ties to the theater community.
2. Bryant Park. Many people are familiar with the famed Central Park (also a nice free activity to enjoy in Manhattan), but Bryant Park is less well known. Indeed, it was more infamous due to its former run-down state and as a home to drug dealers and other unsavory sorts. Now, however, Bryant Park is a beautiful haven, located behind the New York public library (also free and well worth seeing) between 41st and 42nd on 6th Avenue. It features lovely sculpture, as well as the annual Poem in Your Pocket Day.
3. Go kayaking. Kayaking in New York City? Oh yes. The Downtown Boathouse is a great place to go on weekends and evenings when free kayaking is offered. You can receive guided kayaking help out on the harbor, or in the Hudson River as part of a class, or as part of the walk-up public kayaking. You can find the Downtown Boathouse in Hudson River Park. Try boarding at Pier 26 in TriBeCa between Chambers and Canal or at Peir 64 in Chelsea at West 24th.
4. Attend Summerstage. This is a great attraction in Central Park (Central Park is, of course, free). However, it is only available in the summer. It is a music festival of sorts, offering you the opportunity to hear some pretty good music, receiving quality entertainment for free. Dance, word and film selections are also featured at Summerstage. Summerstage takes place at the Rumsey Playfield. You should enter Summerstage by way of 69th and 5th Avenue.
