4 Great Detroit Michigan Restaurants

GFCosmo
Although not commonly mentioned in conversations about America's best restaurant cities, Detroit has more to offer than anyone not from the city may imagine. From world class BBQ to Greek food that makes you feel as if in you're the Mediterranean, Detroit has a large menu of restaurants, suitable for just about any pallet.

Slows BBQ

Show up early, because Slows Bar BQ may be the hottest restaurant in the city. Located down Michigan Avenue, Slows serves up world class BBQ, in the form of ribs, pulled pork and briskets. The sauce is your choice and always comes on the side, so you have the option of tasting all the home produced BBQ sauces. For a regional favorite, try the orange pop flavor. This is made with the locally produced Fago Orange soda. Most meals come with your choice of side, including macaroni and cheese (but made with elbow noodles), potato salad and coleslaw. If you are planning ahead, make sure to put your name down at Slows well before you're hungry, as the line often exceeds two hours of wait time.

Greektown

One of the most vibrant districts in Detroit, Greektown is a small block that consists of a casino, a few shops and some of the best restaurants in the city. Whether you are visiting the Cyprus or the Pegasus Taverna, you are going to probably sink your teeth into the best tasting gyro you've ever tasted. Many of the restaurants also offer sides of garlic hummus with fried artichoke hearts. It really does not matter what restaurant you are visiting in Greektown, as all have their own specialties while being mouth watering.

Mexicantown

Unlike its Greektown counterpart, Mexicantown is not located right of the downtown district. In fact, Mexicantown is split off from the rest of Detroit by the sprawling interstate. However, if you are looking for authentic Mexican cuisine without traveling 2000 miles across the boarder, Mexicantown is a solid option. There are dozens of locally owned restaurants throughout the district, but your best bet is to find one that isn't heavily advertised. Several throughout the area have large billboards and advertisements in your local hotel, but many of these serve Americanized versions of the food. The smaller eateries specialize in authentic cuisine from our southern neighbor.

Hot Dogs

When hot dogs come to mind, you probably don't immediately think of Detroit. Most likely it is Chicago or New York, but after visiting Detroit that thought is sure to change. Detroit is home to some of the best hot dogs in the world, with a style and flavor for everyone. American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island are the two most known and are actually located right next to each other and are constantly battling for the title of "Best Detroit Hot Dogs." Both specialize in chili dogs and, although the two dogs may look the same, there is a strikingly different flavor (due to the hot dog casing and spices used in the sauce). To add to the intrigue of the restaurants, American Coney Island started out owned by two immigrant brothers from Greece, but the two fought constantly and one split off to open Lafayette Coney Island right next door. These aren't the two only hot dog joints in the area though, as The Potato Place, National Coney Island and other locations offer top-notch hot dogs.
