4 Mistakes for Filmmakers to Avoid
These Tips Will Help Independent Filmmakers Create More Entertaining Movies.
There is nothing more annoying than soundtracks that drown out dialogue and action in a film. Loud soundtracks are unnecessary when making independent films. They are not encouraged in any film for that matter. It causes a distraction between the audience and more important elements in a scene. These elements include the dialogue between characters.
It will be difficult to convey a certain mood when loud music is playing in the background. This is one area where it may be best for filmmakers to see professional audio assistance. Some independent films are also filled with unnecessary music. In this case, the music takes over a scene but does not move the story forward. This can occur in many films where scenes are longer than they should be.
Bad Actors
Independent filmmakers may not be able to afford to cast Will Smith in a film. However, it is still necessary to have great actors. This is an area that some filmmakers find difficult to achieve. We are often tempted to cast our friends in our films due to budget limitations. Many filmmakers grab the first person that shows an interest to act in a film. Doing so may lessen the film's quality in the long run.
This is one of the many mistakes that filmmakers should avoid. It is unwise to cast bad actors in a film. Scheduling auditions will be the best choice. Independent filmmakers should determine what they want to accomplish with a particular character. This will allow him or her to select the actor that best represents the character.
Actors are an important part of the storytelling process. Each performance must be believable to the audience. Filmmakers who use bad actors will definitely regret doing so. Bad actors can ruin a film's potential success. It is possible to find good actors.
Objects in scene
Independent film productions can be rapid and out of control at times. Crew members may be attempting to do multiple setups in a small timeframe. Cast members may be in the middle of wardrobe changes and dialogue rehearsals while the director is trying to figure out what the next shot will look like. It is easy to shoot a scene with unwanted objects in the background.
This is especially true when shooting and independent film using a small production crew. Filmmakers should always make sure that there are no useless objects lingering around when the camera is rolling. These objects include tripods, lighting poles, cables and boom microphones. All items can easily be forgotten while everyone is trying to wrap up a long day or move on to the next scene.
However, no filmmaker wants to realize this in post-production or worse, at a film festival screening. It is best to straighten that problem out before it occurs. If a movie is shot on film, it may not be easy to go back and re-shoot a particular scene. There should never be random objects in a film.
Long Scenes
Feature films are usually two hours in length. Movie audiences expect films to last for a certain period of time. However, that does not mean that the scenes in a film should be long for no reason. Some independent films include long scenes that do not have merit. This is another mistake that filmmakers should avoid when creating their story.
Long scenes are usually found in drama films. These scenes include people sitting somewhere or having a pointless conversation. It is not necessary for filmmakers to create long scenes to get a point across. These scenes can suck the energy out of a film. This will make for an unpleasant viewing experience.
