4 Must Have Blu-Ray Science Fiction Films

Notes on Some of the Best Science Fiction Films Ever

Jacob Malewitz
So what's the deal with blu-ray? I personally enjoy blu-ray films not just because of picture quality, but also sound and the overall experience. After all, who doesn't want to watch four versions of Blade Runner for the price of a regular DVD?

Some science fiction fans in general ignore the film market, but if you think about it, some of the best stories of science fiction and fantasy have been brought to the screen and can be seen in your living room. While there are dozens if not hundreds of quality science fiction films which deserve to be owned, there's a smaller collection of blu-ray science fiction films. Still, with blu-ray beating HD, you can expect more of the top titles to be released. And even if it's not straight science fiction, a perfect example being Avatar, you can still expect an enjoyable experience.

So here are my 4 blu-ray picks that you must own if you're into science fiction film, TV shows, or novels.

Blade Runner
The Blade Runner blu-ray edition is perhaps the very best movie on blu-ray right now. Yes, Blade Runner is one of the best films of all time, but the shear quality of the blu-ray version, the multitude of extras and different cuts of the films offered, and the thrilling experience make it not only the must buy science fiction film, but the best blu-ray edition available. It may stray away from the original "I Dream of Electric Sheep" by famed storyteller Phillip K. Dick, but it's a true cinematic storytelling experience.

Donnie Darko
This is not even close to Blade Runner in terms of blu-ray quality, but Donnie Darko must be noted in any science fiction film list. The film is such an oddity that I watched it over and over again just to see all the details I missed. Jake Gyllenhal is in top form, but the true master here is Richard Kelly, the writer director behind the masterpiece. Many fans have cried foul for the quality, but it's still the best version of this modern cinematic classic available.

Star Trek
J.J. Abrams, the guy behind "Lost" and "Fringe," has caused some uproar among Star Trek fans about his alternate version of how things could have happened for Kirk and the Enterprise. I happen to own the complete Next Generation blu-ray bundle, and love these movies. You really can't compare them, but in terms of entertainment value and true science fiction spectacle, you can't go wrong with this film. If you're more of a hard nosed fan of the original ideas of the series, not only can you get the Star Trek TNG complete movie set, but the original series itself is being released on blu-ray.

The Fifth Element
Oh, how many top titles, from Transformers to Pandorum, I'm leaving out so I can get this masterful space opera/shoot em up in. I personally know many people who hate this movie, but I loved the story, the acting, and the special effects. In terms of popcorn movies, it's a winner, and the blu-ray edition is the best version available.

Crap movies like the 5th element over masterpieces like 2001, huh? Interesting. I guess everyone has an opinion.
