Although my treats were always after school treats, you can make these anytime and have them ready for your children when they come home. You may even decide to start a family tradition and reserve Saturday afternoon as your family treat time. What better way to get your family together than with food.
Even if you don't start a family tradition, you can still make these 4 quick and easy treats, and surprise them when they do come home. I have to warn parents now, some of the instructions will include sugar, and you have to decide if they are healthy enough for your child.
Frozen Juice Cups
Something cold, sweet and frozen makes a delicious treat and can easily be made by pouring your child's favorite juice into a paper cup and freezing. If you want to, you can wait until the juice is half frozen, then insert a Popsicle stick in the middle of it. If not, let them use a spoon, the treat will be just as good.
This can be made with grape juice or pineapple juice. These are the favorites. They are sweet and healthy for your child and they also contain vitamins and antioxidants that are great for your child's health.
Frozen Fruit Cup
You can make this three ways. Use regular fruit cocktail, the lite fruit cocktail or use pineapple juice and mix in your own fresh fruit like pineapple chunks, maraschino cherries, apples, bananas and mango. Make these the same way you would your frozen juice cups.
Make Donuts From Biscuits
This was always a favorite treat of mine that my mother use to make for me. Being a child, I thought it was amazing that donuts could be made from canned biscuits. You can purchase any kind of canned biscuits you want, but I found the plain biscuits, without the buttermilk is best.
These are best cooked in a deep fryer, but any pan that is deep can work. The donuts are going to be fried, so if this recipe is not for you, don't worry. For those of you who don't mind a little fried food, just make sure that whatever oil you use is trans fat free.
Just don't use olive oil to fry your donuts! When you open up your can and separate the biscuits, just punch a hole through them with a finger, then test the heat of the oil by dropping one of your donuts in it. If your donut starts cooking, then the oil is the right temperature.
Put your donuts in the fryer, and cook them on both sides, but make sure you don't cook them too fast. You want them to cook a pretty brown, and you want them cooked inside and outside. When they are all done, spread them out on a piece of towel paper to let them drain.
Before they cool completely, sprinkle them with either powdered sugar, or a sugar and cinnamon mixture. Let these donuts cool before your children eat them. These are good for snacks or as a treat at breakfast.
Semi Homemade Sugar-Cinnamon Cookies
I know, more sugar. But these cookies are so delicious. If you don't want to however, you don't have to sprinkle sugar on them. Leave them plain, and they will still be delicious.
These are semi homemade because you use the frozen sugar cookie dough and let it thaw to the consistency of dough you use for making cookies. You're not just going to cut them and throw them into the oven. First you're going to spread the dough out and sprinkle cinnamon over it, then roll it into a ball and put it back into the refrigerator until it firms a little.
About 30 minutes should be long enough to firm the dough up. Then take it out, and spread it out onto a floured surface. Spread it to 1/4 inch thick, then get your cookie cutters or a medium glass and start cutting out your cookies.
Place them on your cookie sheet and cook according to the instructions on the package. When your cookies are done, sprinkle a sugar and cinnamon mixture over them before they cool.
I know the cookies and donuts may have a lot of sugar, so the decision is yours about what to feed your children, or how much you feed them. If you should decide to make the donuts or sugar-cinnamon cookies, depending on your children's age, one donut or one to three cookies as a snack, with a glass of milk, makes delicious quick and easy treats.
