4 Remakes to Cast Miley Cyrus In

Valerie Ferrari
In the early part of 2010, when her movie "The Last Song" co-starring Greg Kinnear as her dad, was coming out, Miley Cyrus was quoted as saying: "I want to be a real actress, but not lose the Miley Cyrus factor." If I was a film director, the first thing I would tell Miley is, in order to be a really good actress, she will have to lose the 'Miley Cyrus factor' for many worthy roles. She'll have to be the character in the movie and not herself. Just for the next four paragraphs, let's pretend I am a film director and have the ability to choose several movies to remake with one condition: I have to give Miley Cyrus a part. I would proceed to remake some films that, for whatever reason got a little lost in the shuffle. Let's take it from there.

1. "Split Image" (1982) is a movie about a young man at loose ends who is lured into a cult by an attractive girl, played by Karen Allen. His parents hire a cult deprogrammer (James Woods), to kidnap him and reverse the brainwashing. We'll have to update the story a bit and somehow get the Danny / Joshua character into "exit counseling," but Miley Cyrus shouldn't have any problem with the Rebecca / Amy role, the girl who introduces the boy to the cult. The characters had two names because the cult leader (Peter Fonda) made them renounce their given names and families. Maybe Miley's dad, Billy Ray, could play the cult leader.

2. "My Little Girl" (1986) was about a volunteer at a center for girls from troubled homes who gets emotionally involved with the kids. Mary Stuart Masterson had the original role of Franny, who organizes a talent show to help the girls with their self-esteem. Jennifer Lopez, in her first movie, was one of the teens. This one is sort of an exception -- a little of the "Miley Cyrus factor" might work out swell in this one.

3. "Diary of a Hitman" (1991) starred Forest Whitaker as a gun for hire who is supposed to take out Jain (Sherilyn Fenn). Sharon Stone played her sister. Miley's a little young right now, but the first two movies didn't happen overnight, so in her early twenties, she'll work out very well in the Sherilyn Fenn role. The real problem here might be recasting Forest Whitaker's role.

4. By now, Miley would be in her mid-twenties, we've made a few bucks together, and I'm beginning to feel like Preminger and Hitchcock rolled into one. Always a sucker for a classic film noir, I say, "Miley let's remake 'Ivy' (1947). You'll get to play a real schemer who poisons her hubby and frames her lover so she can marry a billionaire. You'll win an Oscar!" That's where the casting fantasy ends because Miley watches the original and hates the idea of being compared to Joan Fontaine, or so she says. She kicks me to the curb and the next thing you know she's making new films with someone else.

Even though this was just a fantasy and we're now back to reality, it really isn't that far-fetched to think that Miley Cyrus will be offered some great roles and have the opportunity to grow and become a serious actress.
