4 Seasons Patchwork Quilting Patterns

Quilting through the Seasons

Try these free designer quilting patterns through the various seasons of the year, to take some of the challenge out of patchwork quilting. You will be able to produce seasonal quilts much quicker by machine sewing, however a hand-quilted look can still be achieved by appliqueing or embroidery-stitching over your quilt blocks.

Spring Patterns

A soft springtime-colored prairie-pinwheel quilt design is show in this "Broken Dishes Quilt" (repeated below in a fall palette) and a pastel checkerboard design, as seen in "Now and Later". Romantic "Hearts and Flowers Wall Hanging" mixes applique with patchwork, and could be repeated onto several quilt blocks, to create quilt bedding, all of these from AllPeopleQuilt.com.

Springtime florals are soft and fragrant, in pale shades of romance, as show in this sweet "Innocence Pattern" wall-hanging. And a yummy spring desert-themed "Sweet Stuff Pattern" quilt is shown in pastel shades of pink, blue, and lavender, both from Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Summer Patterns

AllPeopleQuilt.com brings these next quilt patterns, in bright shades of summer sunshine, sand, and sea, combined into wave patterns, as shown in this "Bright Pickle Dish Wall Quilt". My favorite is this bordered, block-work quilt, bathed in sunshine yellows, and graduated ocean-blue with white-water tones, puzzle-pieced into a large wave, as pictured, with simple instructions on how to "Stick with a Two-Color Palette".

Nothing says summertime blues better than underwater ocean-life scenes, in a colorful fish-bordered panel of frolicking sea creatures, and coral reefs painted in ocean blues and sea greens. "Secrets of the Reef Pattern" offers easy-to-make, pre-printed quilting options for the beginning quilter. Another wonderful patchwork quilt for beginners is this "Happy Days Quilt Pattern", showing children at play in sunshine yellows, with bright-blue candy pinwheels adorning its mid-design panel, both from Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

A patriotically colorful, summery-watermelon, "Dinorama Rag Quilt Pattern" steals the show with frayed edges, and small squares to stitch into place, by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Top it off with summertime quilted "Watermelon Place-Settings", which are guaranteed to liven up any barbeque, or other summertime family gathering.

Fall Patterns

Border an autumn-colored pinwheel quilt with appliqued falling leaves, and acorns (a variation on the above springtime pinwheels) as displayed in "Side Dish". Where this Halloween-theme applique wall-hanging, as shown in "Spooky Pumpkins Wall Quilt", provides fall fun for the kids, both from AllPeopleQuilt.com.

AllPeopleQuilt.com also brings us these, "Folk Art Floral Wreaths", combining rustic fall colors, appliqued into a wreath pattern, on top of large floral quilt blocks. For autumn decorating see this "Bold Sunburst Table Runner" with sunflower quilt blocks, set onto a deep, rich-tone paisley print.

Winter Patterns

Appliqued-snowflake quilt blocks are scattered over a softly-snowing pattern of deep blue, as displayed in "Re-Imagine Dear Jane Blocks" from AllPeopleQuilt.com, along with this glittery-star snowflake, patchwork quilt in light blues, with red and burgundy highlights, as presented in "Use a Single Fabric Collection".

Try making an elegant, yet easy, stained-glass window quilt in an "American Heritage Pattern" as shown (¾" seam-tape between panes could speed up quilting) from Robert Kaufman Fabrics, as is this more difficult "Linens and Lace Pattern", using exotic sepia tones within lacy-snowflake designs. It is alright to take a few short-cuts when quilting through the seasons (as I have suggested above) so you can get onto the next fun seasonal project.
