4 Teen Birthday Party Ideas

From Hanging Out to Making a Video

Ainsley Patterson
I remember planning a teen birthday party for me and my friends when I was in high school. I didn't really choose a theme, instead I decided on what kind of party I wanted to have, and what kind of food I wanted to serve, which was usually determined by the amount of money my parents would allow me to spend. If you have a teen birthday party to plan and you aren't sure what kind of party to throw, then consider some of the suggestions below, they worked great for me.

General Hangout Teen Birthday Party

Sometimes I decided that rather than really emphasizing the fact that it was a birthday party my friends would be attending, I decided to opt for a night of just generally hanging out. We would do the wacky things that teens like to do when they hang out including, playing board games, talking about the latest high school gossip, and just being silly and ridiculous. I would usually just plan to have hamburgers and hot dogs for this type of party, with plenty of junk food and pop to go along with the meal. I would still have cake and ice cream, but that was about as far as the birthday party theme went at this teen birthday party.

Movie Night Teen Birthday Party

My friends and I really loved watching all different kinds of movies, so planning a movie night teen birthday party worked great for my circle of friends. We would usually have pizza, candy, popcorn, and pop while we watched whatever movies my friends and I scrounged up, no need to rent. Since movies generally made us sleepy after a while, I would reserve this teen birthday party idea for a slumber party rather than for a girl/boy party.

Dance Teen Birthday Party

One of the best teen birthday parties I ever attended was a dance party. The garage had lights and a sound system going so that we could dance the night away, but there were also other things we could do, like jumping on the trampoline, or just sitting around and talking. The dance teen birthday party was a blast! There were all kinds of snacks served, but no real meal, which kept the party going. If your teen loves to dance, then this party is a great idea, and if you own your own sound system then it is a very affordable option.

Get Creative Teen Birthday Party

Some of the best times I had with my friends when I was in high school were the times when we were forced to get creative because our small town didn't offer much in the way of entertainment. We would often make our own SNL-like video skits. We would record about a half an hour worth of skits that took us about 20 hours to record just right. Not only was it fun to dress up and play these different characters, but it was also fun to watch the finished product with our families. When we had these types of parties we would generally forge for ourselves when it came to food, we would just choose something that the person hosting already had around their house. If you have a camcorder and a creative group of teens then this party is a great and affordable idea for a teen birthday party.

Usually when your teen is looking to plan a teen birthday party you won't have to do too much work yourself beyond maybe taking them to the grocery store for some food. Teens are capable of setting up their own party space, getting the word out about their party by word-of-mouth or through e-mail, and they can even prepare the food for their party. What you can help them with, however, is coming up with a great way to entertain their guests. So, if your teen is looking for a great teen birthday party idea, try running some of the above four suggestions by them.
