4 Things You Should Know About Proper Tire Maintenance

Michael Robertson
If you would like to learn more about proper tire maintenance, then you'll want to read this article. The tires on a vehicle are probably one of the most important items to pay attention to, but for many, they are the one item on an automobile that we fail to maintain the most. In this article we will discuss Wheel alignment, Wheel balance, Tire rotation and Tire air pressure. After reading this article you should be able to properly maintain your tires which will significantly increase the safety and performance of your vehicle. We will first talk about the importance of wheel alignment.

Proper wheel alignment is crucial to having a safe vehicle. If your wheels are not properly aligned, your tires will wear uneven and cause them to wear out much faster. Improper wheel alignment will cause your vehicle to pull to the right or left under certain circumstances. If your wheels are not aligned correctly, when you apply the brakes the vehicle could pull very hard to the right or left, causing unsafe driving conditions. So with this in mind, it's very important to keep your wheels aligned at all times. The next item we need to discuss is wheel balance.

Much like wheel alignment, wheel balance will cause the vehicle to react in many of the same ways. Improper tire balance will cause the vehicle to vibrate going down the road, pull to the left or right and uneven wear on the tires making for unsafe conditions and causing them to wear out much faster. If your vehicle has not been moved for an extended period of time, chances are the tires will be improperly inflated and out of balance. Make sure to check your tires out thoroughly before putting your vehicle back on the road after taking it out of storage. Rotating your vehicle tires is very important but something most of us forget to do.

Rotating your vehicle tires should be accomplished approximately every six months. Every six months move your front tires to the back and back tires to the front. It would be smart to also have the tires thoroughly checked and balanced at that time. Rotating your vehicle tires will help them wear more evenly and greatly extend the life of the tires. Our fourth tire maintenance item we will talk about is air pressure.

Air pressure is very important in maintaining your tires. Improperly inflated tires will affect your engines performance, your gas mileage and can cause your tires to wear unevenly. Improperly inflated tires will cause your vehicle to pull very hard to the right or left which will make for unsafe conditions. Most tires have the required inflating pressures stamped on the side of the tire. Required pressures are also posted in your vehicle manual. It's good to get into the habit of visually checking your tires on a daily basis.

So you can see, there are a lot of things to consider and pay attention to when it comes to vehicle tire maintenance and safety. So remember to have your wheels properly aligned, make sure your wheels are well-balanced, rotate your tires every six months and check your tire air pressure on a regular basis. Creating a pattern of completing these four tasks to maintain your vehicles tires will greatly increase the life of your tires, increase your vehicle performance and create a much safer driving environment.

and look at the inside of the door frame, on both the door and the body of the car. 90% of vehicles have it here. Still can't find it?

A lot of Volkswagen, some BMW/Mercedes - The inside of your gas door.
Nissan - It's on the underside of your center console. There's 2 sections to your center console, a smaller top section and big bottom section. Open the smaller top section and look on the underside of the lid.

Other than that, go with 32 and check the internet.

Two big problems with this information:

1 - Many tires are supposed to be rotated cross-directionally in addition to front-to-rear (front left to back right, front right to back left). Check the manual.

2 - For most OEM applications, NEVER GO BY THE PRESSURE ON THE ACTUAL TIRE!!!! It will only list the MAXIMUM pressure allowed and most of the time, that's 65-70 PSI. And do you really think the tires you bought for the car are made EXCLUSIVELY for your car?? Your tires most definitely go on more vehicles then you ever would have guessed. What really makes the difference in pressure between different cars (which probably have the same size wheels 15, 16, 17 inch) is based on numerous things: The weight of the vehicle, suspension (the spring rates, the bound / rebound), weight distribution, drive wheels (fwd, rwd, awd), alignment settings.... ETC. When in doubt, go with 30 - 35.

Check your manual. It might even say it on the back cover. If you don't have it, open the drivers door
