5. Donnie Darko
The cult classic may be known for how oddball the plot was (and how it didn't make a whole lot of sense), but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Donnie, played by Jake Gyllenhal, survives a random plane crash in his room, but things are starting to get really freaky. Also, who is that man in the bunny suit who's always following Donnie? Trust me, time travel works its way into the movie, but not quite in a way that you'd expect, so it's definitely worth a watch. Oh, and don't accidentally get the horrid direct-to-DVD sequel S. Darko.
4. Peggy Sue Got Married
Based on the original song "Peggy Sue", it's about the title character's troubling times of adulthood. She married the wrong guy too soon and never got to really live out her life. However, during a school reunion, Peggy Sue faints during a dance and somehow finds herself back in her old high school. Amazed by the nostalgia, she decides to take matters in her own hands and attempts to change her future. With stellar acting by Kathleen Turner and a rather young Nicholas Cage (plus a more-than-a-cameo role by Jim Carrey), it turns out to be a really sweet 80s romantic comedy.
3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Finally, we dig into the science fiction genre! Taking place right after the prequel, Kirk and crew, sadly without their beloved and destroyed Enterprise, finally have a reborn Spock in tow and a Klingon Bird of Prey as their ship. On their journey back to Earth, they come across a gigantic alien that is destroying the Earth in order to find any surviving humpback whales (yes, it sounds ridiculous, but it's fun). Deciding that it's up to them to save the day, the captain and his crew journey back in time to 1980's Los Angeles to find whales, but their future knowledge clashes hilariously with the wild standards of the 1980s. This truly is a film that anyone could watch and find a lot of fun in, especially when Kirk and Spock are paired together, Spock being the one who is puzzled by how the human beings of the time are so casual and acts weird in their eyes.
4. Star Trek: First Contact
Okay, okay, don't worry. It'll be the last Star Trek film I'll say in this list...until the next one. Connecting in with the Next Generation show and movies, Captain Jean-Luc Picard still has nightmares of his time as one of the Borg. The thoughts are cut short, however, when the Earth is attacked by the Borg. A defense is held, but a Borg sphere somehow opens a hole to go back in time, affecting the Earth and destroying all of the population. The Enterprise crew dives into the portal and finds out the year is when humanity made first contact with alien life forms. However, at the same time, it is revealed that some Borg have slipped onto the ship in an attempt to take it over. Split into two groups, one defends the ship from Borg takeover while the other heads down to Earth to make sure that first contact will happen. In the midst of all the struggles, Picard is attempting to get over his desire for revenge for what the Borg did to him. An action movie that most could watch and understand, First Contact stands out as one of the better Star Trek movies and stories.
