1. Learn your child's style of learning. Some children are very good at learning by doing worksheets, but others need some form of stimulation via manipulative tools or play. Some children learn best with a combination of both. If you have more than one child, it can be tempting to teach each one in the same way. Watch your child's reaction to different learning activities and see which one they enjoy and seem to succeed with and then capitalize on the method your child enjoys.
2. Be encouraging but don't push. As parents, we think we are encouraging our children but it can appear to be pushing our children too far. You should make the learning environment a positive one, but when your child gets bored or tired do not push them to finish the activity. Instead, be encouraging and let them know you will be returning to the activity tomorrow. Too much of one thing can be a bad thing because it can cause a loss of interest in learning. Make sure to have some form of positive reinforcement and don't let your frustrations show when things are not going perfectly.
3. Keep your child interested in learning. One of the most important things to do when teaching your child is to peak their interest to keep learning. If you see your child thriving in simple addition, try mixing in some simple subtraction. By keeping your child challenged, it will help prevent boredom in learning and keep their thirst for learning alive. Make sure to introduce new topics every few weeks, while ensuring your child is mastering previously learned topics.
4. Make learning fun. The best way to maximize your child's potential is to make learning fun. In our home, we keep many educational games on hand. It helps because while children are having fun they are learning without even knowing. Games like Trouble and Sorry build social skills and problem solving skills that cannot be taught by just talking. Using traditional board games, as well as computer games, can enhance children's learning potential. If you prefer to use computer-based games, look for websites that offer educational value such as Jumpstart and Starfall. Just remember to use web-based games sparingly and set a timer as other activities need to be incorporated as well.
Learning these four things has been able to enhance my children's learning potential. Remember to use every opportunity to teach your child something new and exciting. Remember as parents it is our duty to keep the thirst for learning alive in our children and using the aforementioned tips can help your child succeed in learning.
