Hawaii builds its tourism reputation on sand, surf and sun. But there are other reasons to put it on your list. Here are a few activities that would be part of my itinerary … add them to yours to get something different from your visit to Hawaii.
Check Out the Volcanoes
Seeing an active volcano up-close is a life-changing experience. Hawaii offers many opportunities to see the living earth at work. You can play it safe with a hike through its lava tubes. Or maybe you can dig in and see how you might get this close to the lava ! When you see the wholesale landscape change a volcano can produce, you'll never look at your planet the same again.
Swill the Coffee
You might live near in awesome coffeehouse with first-rate baristas. But be ready for the taste of coffee just miles from the source. Every time I've visited a coffee-producing region like Costa Rica or Queensland, Australia, the coffee has astounded me. Last time I visited Hawaii, I wasn't a coffee drinker - but I plan to make up for it next time. Be sure to tour a plantation if you can work it into your schedule.
Do a Craft Beer Crawl
Hawaii can do more for your taste buds than just provide pineapple, poi and seafood. Maui Brewing is on its way up as a craft brewer, with its CoCoNut Porter and Big Swell IPA giving canned beers a good name. If you visit its pub in Lahaina on the island of Maui, you can check out some innovative brews that never make it to the mainland … like its onion beer or Milk of Amnesia sweet stout.
Airline Curiosity
If you're one of those rare people who loves air travel, Hawaiian Airlines should pique your interest. It regularly earns awards for on-time performance and quality service. It seems to be the rare U.S.-based carrier that passengers actually praise often and loudly. It's also helpful and interactive in social media, with friendly responses on Twitter and Facebook. Any vacation is better if getting there is part of the fun.
