Know Your Brand: In order to attract fans to your music, you must first know the brand and genre of music you are producing and promoting. With this being said, you must also have a strong passion for the music you create and what you're music says about you and others associated with you. Figure out what sets you apart from other musicians, even if there are in the same genre of music as you, find out the main feature that "separates you from the fake". Since the average music listener won't know who you are right away, your music must speak for you and it must speak LOUDLY!
Identity of Your Fans: What type of people like your music? How do they act, what do they wear, what do they do for a living? You must ask yourself all these questions about the fans you already have. You must evaluate your typical fan so you know what group of music listeners you appeal to. Once you know what your typical fan does, you will figure out different ways to reach out to them. This means you will know what their interest are outside of music and that's a plus!
Reach out to Fans: Once you have identified what your typical fan is, the next step is to find out where they are located and reach out to them. For example, if you create a song about cars, more or likely you will want to find fans that have an interest in cars, these will be the fans that will appreciate and admire the song the most. With every song you create, sit and think on the fanbase your creating it for.
Promote, Promote, Promote: Now that you know where your fans are, promote the hell out of your material! Don't waste time going to places that you know your fan aren't at. Stick to the places that are flooded and overwhelmed with your fan or potential fans in the process. Flood your fans with lots of material, free material. Free material is a good way to promote yourself and gain the trust of a fan in the process. After all, you're giving away merchandise for free and if it's great quality, the fan will feel as though they got a deal. Guess what's next? The next time you come out with a song or CD, the same fan you gave merchandise to for free, will more or likely buy everything you're offering.
