4 Ways to Make Extra Money in Today's Declining Economy

Antoinette McGowan
With the economy the way it is more and more people are finding themselves out of work. In most situations people are finding that once they lose their job they have to take jobs that do not pay enough to cover their bills plus the necessities of life. The following is ways that you can earn some extra money to help take the pressure off this financial crunch that the majority of Americans are facing.

Recycle Cans:

Recycling cans is one way that you can put some extra money into your pockets. You are not going to get rich doing this but you will be able to afford some of the smaller necessities. Instead of throwing out your aluminum cans, save them and when you have a few garbage bags full take them to the recycling center. It does not seem like a lot but it will help to give you the extra money to get stuff like shampoo, dish detergent, deodorant and stuff like that. You can even ask friends and family who do not recycle to start keeping their empty cans for you to pick up. There is no need to tell your friends and family that you are doing this because money is tight. In fact just tell everyone that you are going "Green" and want to help protect the environment and reduce the amount of waste in the landfills.

Haul Off Scrap Metal:

If you have a truck then you can earn some extra money by hauling off scrap metal to the recycling centers. There are a lot of people out there that have old appliances that they can not haul off themselves and do not want or can not afford to pay some one to haul it off for them. By offering to haul off their old appliances you are doing them a favor while at the same time making a little profit off the old appliances at the recycling center.

Root digging:

People can actually make some decent money going out and digging roots. My husband and I have actually done this before as a way to earn some extra money. We went out on the weekends and dug golden seal roots. When we got enough saved up we took them to the purchasers who would then give up the going rate per pound. When we did this we did it for two weekends in a row and earned over $300 dollars for what we had. The rates fluctuate and get higher toward the end of the season. I will admit that it is dirty and hard work but well worth it when you need some extra money. These roots are found in the woods and a search can let you know if they are in your area. In addition you will have to check around to find out about buyers in your area. Ginseng roots are another root that can be dug for profit, they pay more but are harder to find.

Babysit in Your Home:

While you are out of work and in need of money to cover your bills, you will discover that there are still a lot of people who are working and in need of daycare. Consider babysitting in your home as a way to earn an income. To increase your chances of obtaining children for you to watch a couple things you can do is go to the police department and get a background check done so that you have that to show to potential parents. You can also increase your chances by getting state certified through your local Department of Children and Family Services. By getting certified this way you can also begin to accept state paid. This allows you to get paid by the government for watching children of parents who are on state paid daycare. I have known several people who prefer to have state paid kids in their home based daycare than non state paid kids. The reason is that they are guaranteed to get paid from the state where as when watching kids that the parents will be paying they run the risk of being used and not paid. However, you have to weigh your circumstances before deciding which way to go.

Recycling cans/bottles in Oregon is even more profitable as we have a bottle bill. I remember as kids we used to walk around parks collecting cans to turn in for spending money. Just be sure to wear gloves! Eeeww!
