4 Ways to Recycle Old Magazines into Creative Projects

C.A. Jacobs
In an age of digital publications and e-readers, many may think magazines have gone the way of dinosaurs. Not me. I love magazines! I love the feel of a good quality magazine with its colorful pages and glossy covers. I keep baskets of magazines in my house. But when those baskets get full, what do I do with the magazines? Sure, I can recycle them through our city's recycling program. But instead I would rather recycle magazine pages into creative projects. Listed here are several creative ways to use old magazines.

Recycle Magazine Pages to Make "Trashy Poetry"
Kids will love this creative project. Grab several magazines and have your children search for words throughout the publications. Then have them create a free verse poem out of the colorful words they have selected. Paste them onto a black piece of construction paper and frame for a unique piece of art that has meaning. Another twist is to take the words and glue them onto magnetic strips for your own version of magnetic poetry.

Recycle Colorful Magazine Pages to Make Great Gift Wrap
Another great use for old magazines is to re-purpose them as gift wrap. Many magazines have beautiful photography and illustrations that make a perfect gift wrapping solution. Search for pages that relate to the gift you are giving for a creative touch.

Recycle Magazines to Create a Mosaic
For a wonderful art project, cut small squares of colors from old magazines to make beautiful mosaics. Glue each piece onto a heavy card stock into a unique contemporary design or to depict a still life. Quick tip: Draw your design on the card stock first so you can concentrate on cutting your pieces to fit.

Recycle Magazines to Make a Unique Piece of Jewelry
This is a simple project that will provide hours of fun as well as some gorgeous jewelry. Find colorful pages from old magazines and cut them into small, long triangular shapes. Then roll each strip onto a toothpick. Glue the end of the strip onto the newly created bead. Seal the bead with clear nail polish. You can experiment with different sizes depending on the strips you cut. String beads together to create bracelets and necklaces. You'll be amazed at the compliments you receive on your beautiful new jewelry.

With these creative ideas, you'll never throw away another magazine. Happy crafting!

I also love magazines and I find it very difficult to get rid of them because I like to use them for crafts. They are really starting to pile up, though, so I need to tear out the most colorful pages and recycle the rest. I make art out of circle punch-outs, but the sqares would look cool too.

My middle daughter made me a necklace out of magazines recycled into beads. She won a 4H award for Green Jewelry. It's my conversation piece :) cheers!
