When your bank account laughs at the idea of buying Christmas presents this year, it's time to review some strategies for ways to get through Christmas on a small budget. I've been in this position a number of times, and the best advice I have developed is to be creative in dealing with small amounts of money.
"Be creative" is not very specific advice, however, when it comes to figuring our how and where to buy presents on a budget. The tried-and-true budget methods would have you make gifts yourself, use coupons and buy sale items, but these don't always fit the people we need to buy gifts for.
Here are four practical ways to get through Christmas on a small budget and find gifts that won't come from the discount bin.
Plan Ahead and Extend Your Budget
Start buying presents as soon as you can. The earlier you start your shopping the more you will be able to spread out the cost of buying Christmas gifts.
Chances are good that you won't have more money closer to the holidays. If you start shopping early you will effectively spread out your spending. You won't tax your bank account as much this way as you would if you wait until December to start shopping.
You'll also have more time to think creatively about what gifts to give to the special people in your life.
Hobby Shopping For Budget Gifts
The best gifts are the ones that really show that you are thinking of the person receiving the gift. One good way to get into another person's shoes for gift giving purposes is to think about that person's hobbies.
Think about how they like to have fun.
If you know a writer, you can buy a very nice pen for much less than you can buy a one hour massage or even for less than a hard-cover book. Not only does this type of gift save you some money, it shows the writer that you honor his or her occupation and ambition.
The same principle applies to all the arts and extends out to other hobbies. Though many hobbies get expensive, there are often small items related to a hobby that can make great gifts for a budget Christmas shopper.
Shop Local
Another method for Christmas shopping on a budget is to shop local for Christmas gifts. When you shop local you are almost guaranteeing that your gift will be unique.
Try the farmers markets near you and see what the vendors are offering that might work as a Christmas gift.
Often there is much more than fresh produce at a farmers' market. Locally produced honey, unique soaps and hand-made craft items can be found at farmers markets and each make good gifts that won't break your budget.
