4 Websites for Teaching Kids About Personal Finance

As a father of a four-year-old, I've recently begun the process of explaining the concept of money to him. It seems that with each progressive generation we're becoming worse and worse at saving. As one generation falls behind in the personal finance learning curve, their children aren't raised with the same money saving values, and in turn their children, and so on and so forth, until we are left with a society of credit card swiping, coupon trashing, spend-at-all-costs consumers who don't understand and don't want to understand saving.

But there are still a few of us out there who have somehow retained the desire to save money and are striving to pass that education along to our children. If you are one of those people, but are finding the educational process somewhat difficult, here are four websites I have found that might help you teach your kids (and maybe even yourself) a thing or two about personal finance.

Family Education

Almost every parent would be happy to find new ideas and ways to save money while at the same time keeping the kids and family entertained. The Family Education website offers a variety of tips, advice, and ideas to maintain family fun while not overextending the family finances.

This is a nice site because it allows you to search by age group, and provides plenty of information not only upon family finances, but upon health, education, behavior, development, and numerous other issues.

Kids and Money

Putting kids and money together can be like mixing oil and water. And trying to teach kids about the importance of proper money management can at times be extremely frustrating. The Kids and Money website advocates improving "financial literacy for children by teaching them to share, save and spend smart." Consider checking out their first video podcast to find out more about saving for goals.

The Teaching Children About Money Blog is a nice, straightforward site that provides articles and videos that are geared toward, as they put it, "Increasing the Financial Intelligence of the Next Generation, Together." You might want to check out their guest post about savings bonds -- yep, definitely my kind of site! The home page also has links to other great kids' websites.

Mommy Savers

While I'm one of the first to have an issue with all sites being set up specifically for "moms" (as if there aren't any of us dads staying at home with the kiddies), the Mommy Savers site is still a good one for frugal living tips and information. You might be asking yourself, how or why does this tie in with teaching kids about personal finance? My answer to you is simple and is actually another question. Who is setting the example at home? In most instances, it is hopefully the parents (although these days, I tend to question this at times). And if the parents aren't educated regarding personal finances, then how are they supposed to be educating their children?
