Actor Shelley Malil, best known for his role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, took the stand in his own defense in a Vista, California courtroom yesterday, stating he never intended to hurt or kill ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe in August, 2008. Malil told the courtroom that he was sorry and that the scene was chaotic.

"I had no idea. I saw the pictures (of her wounds) for the first time, I was stunned. When I look at those pictures, I still can't believe the knife I was holding was responsible for all those injuries,"
Malil stated.

Malil is charged with premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary and if convicted will face up to 21 years in prison.

In the courtroom Malil explained what happened that night in Beebe's San Diego County home. After arriving at Beebe's home and seeing that Beebe was having wine with David Maldonado, a local musician, Malil stated that he felt threatened by Maldonado.

"I heard the chair behind me backing up," Malil explained to the court. "I reach for the knife. ... I grab half the handle and he's pulling my arm, and I'm pulling away from him."

The brawl continued when Malil thought Maldonado was looking for another weapon to attack him with and as such, followed him to the kitchen. At this point, Malil said he realized Maldonado was going to his car, and Malil assumed he was going to retrieve a gun.

At a quiet point in all the pandemonium, Malil stated something hard hit him on the back of his head and that's when he started stabbing. He said he had no idea that he was actually stabbing Beebe until he heard her call out, "Call 911!"

Malil's trial continues into Monday when cross-examination will take place, and closing arguments should be presented by Tuesday.

Shelley Malil has had other roles in Collateral Damage, Getting There (2002), My Favorite Martian (1999), and has also appeared in Scrubs, NYPD Blue, and ER.
