Yesterday on March 15, 2010 65 miles NNW of Concepcion, 80 miles NW of Chillan, 95 WSW of Talca, and 225 miles SW of Santiago, Chili an offshore 6.0 earthquake struck. The next day, today, less than 15 miles NNW, NW, and 5 miles in SW difference a 6.7 earthquake hit near the same location according to USGS. California is 5733.9 miles from Bio Bio, Chili according to DistanceFromTo.net. But remember, it's all about plate tectonics, faults, and the earth's shifting process.
California has the reputation of being a little too close for Pacific comfort. And who's grandfather hasn't said it before, "It's only a matter of time before California slides into the ocean." But that is not all the way true. California sits on the Pacific plate and the only thing between California and the lack of or raging of earthquakes would be the San Andreas fault system. Each side moves at an average total of 2 inches per year according to the USGS.
But that's not to say you need to panic just yet. However, becoming prepared is not such a bad idea since the year 2010 proves unpredictable with Haiti's 7.0, Chili's 8.8, and Sakhalan, Russia's recent earthquakes of 4.7 and 5.8. Both magnitudes of Russia happened today following a Chili aftershock of 5.0. Perhaps Chili is going under a deep length of aftershocks as Haiti has proven. All aside, it's never too late to simply prepare, even if the big one never comes.
California has always experienced mild quakes, cup tumblers, glass tappers, table shifters, as a 2.5 is nothing new. Funny enough that is the latest mild rocker that moves the heart of California according to the USGS, 5 miles from Banning, California as noted this afternoon.
The big talk of the day goes to the 4.4 located at Pico Rivera, California just 10 miles ESE from the Los Angeles Civic Center. Bet you didn't expect that show stopper for today's events California, or did you?
Either way it's safe to say that earthquakes are going to happen in California, why? Because when it comes to the San Andreas, California rocks!

Post a CommentGreat job on this.
Just to let you know how jaded even CA canines have become, my pooch did not so much as bat an eyelash and kept on snoring. The cat didn't seem overly bothered either.
Great artical and you are right it is a good idea to prepare. :-)
Yeah, what's going on?
Hey..maybe it's the 600-pound woman from Nj ;-)
True John, they get them frequent. Alaska does too. Thanks for the comments everyone and yes, the irony of the recent climb leaves much for researchers to do.
Seems to be a lot of earthquakes going around this year.
I thought these smaller ones were part of everyday life to those living there.
this is getting pretty scary. The crazy snow, the crazy rain, all the earthquakes- reminds me of the preaching i heard as a kid about "the end of the world"
didn't know about this! how scary
