44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM)

Sunday, April 5, 2009

For all you country music fans out there don't forget this Sunday, April 5, 2009 is the 44th Academy of Country Music Awards show. I know I have my TV programmed for it. Fans will be able to vote on-line for Entertainer of the Year. The 5 country music stars that have a chance for the top spot are: Kenny Chesney * Brad Paisley * Keith Urban * Carrie Underwood. Wait, let me count them again, whoops, that's only 4. The last but not least nominee for an ACM award needs no lists and no introduction, just your votes - my personal favorite for Entertainer of the Year is - drum roll please - George Strait.

My first introduction to country music was through a George Strait song. I believe I own every CD George has released. The first time I heard that voice I knew I needed to hear more. Not only is George Strait a fantastic country star with many awards in his long career, but he is an outstanding person in general. You will never hear negative rumors or negative gossip about George Strait. He is a dedicated husband and father.

George's first #1 record was in 1981 and he is still going strong in 2009. He has had 56 #1 songs, 22 CMA awards and almost 70 million albums sold. George is 56 years old but he sure doesn't look, or act, that age. He not only has one heck of a voice, but he is also real nice to look at. He does have to put his glasses on to read, but hey so do I.

The only negative I can think of regarding George is the fact his tour doesn't come anywhere near Tennessee. I saw him perform almost 10 years ago and it is still vivid in my mind today. I would like to attend at least one more concert someday.

George is well respected by his fans and peers. George Jones had the honor of inducting George Strait into the County Music Hall of Fame in 2007. In his thank you speech Strait said that honor was something he wanted for a long time as it is the ultimate achievement for any country music star.

George is being honored this year as ACM's Artist of the Decade. He is only the 5th star to receive such an honor. The others were Marty Robins, Loretta Lynn, Alabama and Garth Brooks. Not bad company at all!! Just another reason they refer to him as "King" George. Be sure to watch the Academy of Country Music Awards Show this Sunday.

Unfortunately, I think that the CMA Awards last night were ashame. Don't get me wrong I like Taylor Swifts songs; however, vocalist of the year and entertainer of the year? Come on. It is obvious that Country Music was just trying to prove a point, apparently to Kanye, that Taylor Swift is amazing. Swift is a great writer, but her vocals do not compare to singers like Martina McBride or Reba McEntire. It honestly makes me sad to know that the Academy is rigging the system, and if they aren't and truly think that she is that amazing, then we need to get some new people in the academy who know something about singing. Taylor Swifts first song that she sang on the CMA Awards was a total blow. I almost couldn't stand to watch it. She is a very poor singer live and I have thought that from the beginning. The whole thing was just a big disappointment. She is a FANTASTIC writer, but when it comes to singing she had no business winning all those awards (although, I know it's not her fault, but

I'm glad you found a recording artist whose work you enjoy so much, but I like Brad Paisley out of those nominees.

I used to watch this every year haven't in awhile though. Usually some great new songs introduced during this show.

Yes, George is easy on the eyes! I like country music. I also find it fascinating because it is a "storytelling" genre.

Great write up. I've never been a fan of country music, BUT I am a fan of cowboys. ;-)

    Terrific write-up!

Anything to do with country music grabs my attention. I've been to the opry twice, and wouldn't mind going a third time. It's my favorite type of music, no matter who sings it.
