The 44th Chicago International Film Festival, October 16 - 29, 2008, presented by Cinema/Chicago, will offer moviegoers the best new films from around the world, with several exciting additions, including a "Festival Village" and the launch of Green Screen, a program celebrating our natural environment, the power and artistry of filmmaking, and the intersection between the two. In its fifth decade, the Festival continues to present special appearances by legendary international actors and directors, along with the impressive film line-up for which the Festival is known. Audiences this year will be captivated by 116 feature films, 38 short and student films, and 18 documentaries from more than 45 countries, showcasing both established and promising new filmmakers.
"For 44 years, we've been committed to taking you all across the globe to discover some of the most exciting cinema the world has to offer, right here in Chicago for two weeks only," said Michael Kutza, Founder and Artistic Director of the Chicago International Film Festival. "This isn't your typical Saturday night out at the movies - these are once-in-a-lifetime events. And this year we've set up camp in a new Festival Village to create an even stronger sense of community where you can come out, see the films, meet the people who make them, mingle with your fellow film fans, and most importantly see the world in a whole new way."
Highlights (in chronological order) include:
Kicking off the 44th Chicago International Film Festival will be the adventurous comedy TheBrothers Bloom featuring a star-studded red carpet arrival by the film's director Rian Johnson and Academy-Award® winning actress Rachel Weisz at the Harris Theater, 205 E. Randolph Drive, Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 7pm. The sophomore film from director Rian Johnson (Brick), Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener), Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac), and Academy Award® nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) star in The Brothers Bloom, a globe-trotting comedy about the last great adventure of the world's best con men. In the world of The Brothers Bloom, deception is an art and nothing is as it seems. The brothers have perfected the art of swindling fortunes through years of fraternal teamwork. Now they've decided to take on one last spectacular job-luring a beautiful and eccentric heiress into an elaborate plot that takes them around the world.

A leading figure among Black achievers, Poitier's innumerable honors and awards include being knighted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in 1968, a BAFTA®, three Golden Globes®, the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award, the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, five NAACP Image Awards, and two Golden Bear Awards from the Berlin Film Festival.

Director Bent Hamer's wonderfully skewed view of the human condition, O'Horten, will screen at AMC River East 21 on Monday, October 27 at 6pm. The World Premiere and directorial debut ofJada Pinkett Smith's The Human Contract, will screen as a Gala Presentation and as part of Black Perspectives at AMC River East 21 on Tuesday, October 28 at 7:30pm. The Human Contract is a provocative psychological journey of a successful but repressed advertising executive in full control of his life and career until he encounters a beautiful and sensual woman who introduces him to her world of uninhibited passion and reckless freedom.
Culminating this year's Festival will be Good, directed by Vicente Amorim and based on the acclaimed play of the same name by C.P.Taylor, at the Harris Theater, on Wednesday, October 29 at 7pm.Good stars Oscar® nominee Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) in an extraordinary change-of-pace role as John Halder, a good, decent individual with family problems. As a German literature professor in the 1930s, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Yet with Halder's change in fortune, his seemingly inconsequential decisions potentially jeopardize the people in his life with devastating effects.
In an extraordinary year for film, the 44th Chicago International Film Festival will present an exceptionally high number of feature films and documentaries written or directed by women. Among these noteworthy films are Jada Pinkett Smith's directorial debut The Human Contract,Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy, Valdís Óskarsdóttir's Country Wedding, Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth, Gulshat Omarova's Native Dancer, Aida Begic's Snow, Tanaz Eshaghian's Be Like Others, and Kathryn Millard's The Boot Cake, among many others.
This year, filmgoers are invited to immerse themselves in a complete Festival experience with the new Festival Village, a roughly five-block area within the Streeterville and River North neighborhoods. The three primary film venues - AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois St.), AMC 600 N. Michigan 9 (600 N. Michigan Ave.), and the Harris Theater (205 E. Randolph Dr.) - are all concentrated in the Festival Village, offering audiences complete and easy access to this season's most intriguing films, while creating a sense of community. Additionally, social events will be held at neighboring restaurants, hotels, and clubs before and after screenings to promote interaction among film-goers and provide a fully encompassing festival experience, similar to that of major European Film Festivals.
