4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons: Best Magic Items for Clerics

Michael Strauss
Creating an effective character in 4th edition D&D isn't just about combining a good mix of attributes, powers, feats, race, class, and skills. A truly effective character also needs the right selection of magic items to synergize with the character's build. Inefficient or useless magic items can make a character surprisingly weak, while powerful and efficient magic items can greatly increase the effectiveness of a character. Presented are some of the best magic items for making an effective 4th edition cleric.

Exalted Armor - Especially for clerics that focus on improving healing, this armor provides excellent bonus healing for one critical situation per day.

Symbol of Power - While clerics tend to focus on healing and providing benefits to allies, it is also possible for a cleric to focus on giving penalties to enemies. This holy symbol will greatly reduce an enemy's chance of making a saving throw against such a negative effect.

Armor of Shared Health - Clerics have some of the most powerful healing in the game. With this armor, a cleric should be able to stay healthy by only ever healing allies.

Healer's Armor - This simple armor increases the effectiveness of every healing power of a cleric.

Healer's Brooch - This item is basically the neck magic item version of the healer's armor. The benefits will stack and a healing focused cleric should get both items.

Ring of the Zealous - Against undead, clerics are already incredibly powerful. This ring's property improves the cleric's turn undead power and the daily power makes it truly excellent.

Symbol of Divinity - In an encounter that includes undead, the ability of this holy symbol to regain a used channel divinity power allows a cleric to nearly single-handedly defeat all undead in an encounter.

Symbol of the Warpriest - Even for clerics that don't focus on healing, this holy symbol is a great choice. It will provide free healing to allies almost every single round.

Mace of Healing - Combined with the healer's armor and healer's brooch, this weapon allows a cleric to provide significant bonus healing with every healing power.

Holy Avenger - For clerics that focus on melee combat, this weapon is a great choice. Technically it is designed for paladins, but melee focused clerics can take advantage of the property to use it as an implement just as well as a paladin can.

Proper selection of magic items is all about choosing magic items that work best with the strengths of the characters. Clerics specialize in providing powerful healing and strong benefits to allies, while also dealing large amounts of damage to undead. This short list of magic items will give clerics a powerful advantage in fulfilling their combat role.
