4th of July has always been a big thing in our town. When you're young it's a time to hang out with all your friends and shoot off fireworks and play with sparklers. When you're older it's a time to get together with friends and family and celebrate.
In Mountain Home, the 4th of July is beautiful each and every year. You can watch the fireworks display from either of the two bridges on Norfork Lake. You can tailgate somewhere along the lake to watch from a distance. We had two different places we always went to watch. We can no longer make it to either of these spots.
One was called 'The Knob". It was a very high hill; the road going up the hill felt straight-up and could only be driven on by an ATV, or a truck. Not the best road back in the woods. Many of the other locals would meet on this 'knob' and from here we could see the fireworks perfectly.
Instead of being on a crowded bridge with a bunch of people, we were set back from them on top of a hill, silently chatting while watching the fireworks. This place became popular fast and unfortunately has been gated off, so we can no longer visit this place for the fireworks.
Our other spot was called the 'Bluffs'. Now this was a very popular spot in the summertime. This as well as the road to the knob is on the back roads around my house. Very close and convenient so we were at the bluffs all the time. You had to park at the top and work your way down the washed out road to get to the bluffs. Or you could ride an ATV; it would easily maneuver over the road. I haven't been here in awhile so I'm not sure if it's still accessible from the back road.
You could reach the bluffs by the back road or by the lake. We always met many new people that way. We'd mingle with the tourists in their boat on the lake. We'd have parties and it didn't matter if you had a boat or not. We could swim and have fun and enjoy ourselves. This place was and still is a very popular spot on the lake.
The bluffs consisted of two different ones. There was a high one and a short one. Now depending on the lake being up or down, these bluffs were not usually the same height every time. The short one was usually about five feet high. The big one was usually 30 feet high if I remember correctly. I just remember it being very high up.
I jumped off this big one three times my entire teenage life. I was a little afraid of heights and each time that I jumped was because I said 'the hell with it' and I'd take off running until I was falling towards to the water. Talk about a rush!! This is a good habit for any adrenaline junkie.
If you plan to visit Mountain Home you should definitely rent a boat if you don't own one, and find the bluffs. It's fun to watch other people jump and dive off the bluffs. Remember you also meet many nice folks. Like usual, if you cannot swim very well, always have your life jacket on!! Otherwise just be safe and have fun!

Post a CommentWe always enjoy the fireworks each year at Norfork. Does anyone know if the Norfork fireworks are on Friday or Saturday?
There is also the big firework display at ASU Campus every year now.
