If you find yourself in San Antonio for July 4th, don't just light some sparklers and call it a day. Get out and celebrate Independence Day at one of these fine events:

A Traditional San Antonio 4th of July at the Institute of Texas Cultures (South Central San Antonio)

The Institute of Texan Cultures celebrates July 4th like it was done "back in the day", with 1800s-style frontier activitites and games. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., join the celebration and enlist in the cavalry, play tug-o-war, or learn to walk on stilts, all while the brass band plays on. Admission is free for members, $7 for adults, and $4 for children, seniors, and military personnel.

July 4th Celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park (North West San Antonio)

San Antonio's official July 4th celebration takes place at Woodlawn Lake Park. The festivities kick off with a parade at 11 a.m., in which anyone is welcome to participate. The Kid's Zone features carnival rides and games; children can also compete in a coloring contest from 4-6 p.m. Live music will be played throughout the day; musical highlights include the 5 Star Band at 5:30 p.m., and the U.S. Airforce Band of the West at 7:30 p.m. The "Fireworks Extravaganza" lights the sky over Woodlawn Lake at 9 p.m. This is a free event.

Lackland Air Force Base 29th Annual Star Spangled Festival (South West San Antonio)

At the Lackland Air Force Base's July 4th celebration, enjoy carnival rides, live music, food, and games starting at 3 p.m. and continuing throughout the day. The Air Force's entertainment group Tops In Blue puts on a music, dance, and comedy show, which starts at 8 p.m. The day finishes up with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. Admission is free. Bring a valid photo I.D.

"Salute to the Union" at Fort Sam Houston (North East San Antonio)

Fort Sam Houston's July 4th celebration kicks off with a bang -- a cannon fire salute at 11:30 a.m., specifically. All 50 state flags will be displayed on the main flagpole, members of "Sons of the American Revolution" will ring a bell 13 times to commemorate the original 13 colonies, and tunes will be provided by the Army Medical Band.

Lights of Liberty! -- Six Flags Fiesta Texas (Far North West San Antonio)

Six Flags Fiesta Texas celebrates July 4th with a fireworks extravaganza accompanied by patriotic music, including the "The Star Spangled Banner", "Stars and Stripes Forever", and "God Bless the USA". The show can be seen from any outdoor location in the amusement park. Fireworks begin at 9 p.m., but first you can catch the "Genuine Country" show at Lone Star Lil's Amphitheater, at 8 p.m.
