Fourth of July is the day to relax, have fun and spend time with the family. But what is the most popular event to attend on the 4th? Watch fireworks, of course! To commemorate the nation's birthday, here are a couple of free events scheduled in and around Houston for this special day.

Freedom Over Texas

This annual event is one of the largest and most popular events, not only in Houston, but in the entire nation. The fireworks show, which is sponsored by Shell, provide a fireworks show like no other, with amazing music and colorful lights that will make anyone stop in their tracks and pay attention. If you have never seen this show, this is an event worth checking out and you and your family will surely enjoy it. But since this event draws a huge crowd, make sure to arrive early to get a good seat. Gates open at 4 p.m. and will have a variety of activities, including a volleyball tournament, children play area, food, crafts, and live entertainment, with a special performance by platinum selling Country recording artist Clay Walker, before the live fireworks show. Miller Outdoor Theatre Summer Symphony Nights 4th of July Concert

Miller Outdoor Theatre is known for their spectacular shows, and with their 4th of July show, it will be no different. The event will pay homage to Independence Day as the Symphony will perform American tunes, including American Salute, Celebration Fanfare, as well as The Star Spangled Banner. The show will conclude with a delightful fireworks show that will create memories for you and your family for years to come. Red, Hot, & Blue Festival

The Red, Hot, & Blue Festival is the Woodland's annual 4th of July event and provide a variety of activities for families to have fun and enjoy live entertainment, eating contests, the mini golf courses around Tom Green Park, and much more. The impressive 20 minutes fireworks show, which starts at 9:30 p.m., is the second largest fireworks show behind Freedom Over Houston, and will take place around Woodland's Town Center. For this event, the best place to get the best views of the fireworks will be around Waterway Square, Woodlands Waterway, Waterway Avenue Bridge, and Turning Basin at the park. Admission to the festival is free, but there will be a charge for concession as well as a $5 charge for parking only in the parking garages of Town Center and 24 Waterway as well as on the corner of Six Pines and Lake Robbins. Free parking is available in the Orange, Yellow, and Green parking lots on Timberloch Place, but only on a first come, first serve basis. Red, White, and Bluefest

One of the most energetic and dynamic fireworks shows in the city, The Red, White, and Bluefest fireworks show is truly an event to watch as the sky over Oyster Creek Park will be lit with vibrant hues and the sounds of excited cheers. Before the 20 minute show, the park will be filled with entertainment from live bands, children activities, festival booths, dancing, and more. The event is free, expect for refreshments, which is for a small charge. For individuals who do not want to deal with the large amounts of traffic, they can take a shuttle ride to the park free of charge. The service will be at Mercer Stadium, across from First Colony Mall, and will operate between 4:30p.m.-11:00p.m. But parking is also available for drivers around Oyster Creek Park before the event. If you rather attend the fireworks show, plenty of parking will be available around the city of Sugar Land, as you can get a great view of the fireworks from across the park to as far as First Colony Mall. Missouri City Independence Day Celebration

A tradition for the city of Missouri City, The Independence Day Celebration provides unique activities that will keep the family busy for hours. Before the 30 minute fireworks show, families can enjoy activities from rock climbing to starting in their own dance video. Visitors can also enjoy live music from the band the Tejas Brothers. Although admission is free, to enjoy the activities provided, you have to purchase wristbands ranging from $3 before 6p.m. to $5 if purchased after 6p.m. For the fireworks show, the show will start promptly at 9p.m., which The Missouri City Pops will give a special performance. To get a great view besides at the park, spectators can park in various areas around Buffalo Run Park, from across the street to even a couple of blocks down from the park. Stafford Independence Day Celebration

The fireworks celebration, which begins at 9p.m., is a 20 minute show displaying at the city's Civic Center. To find the best parking, there are other areas, including Stafford Municipal Schools, which will provide good viewing for spectators who want to avoid the crowds. A day before the fireworks show, a festival is held at the Civic Center, which includes fun games for the kids, hayrides, food, drinks, and live music.
