4th of July Fireworks Spectacular in Pittsburgh, Kansas

Jow Smith
Well, the big day came and went. The day when the majority of Americans celebrate their independence. In the Southeast Kansas city of Pittsburg, the annual 4th of July fireworks spectacular went off without a hitch. With thunderstorm watches looming on the horizon, the company that presented the fireworks this year promised nothing, not even rain, would stop them from shooting off the fireworks.

In previous years, the fireworks have been canceled due to inclement weather. This year, a new company replaced the old one with the promise that no matter what, the show would go on. Early on in the evening, storm clouds rolled in and it looked like their promise may be put to the test, but thankfully, the storm never came and the skies remained clear.

Every year, countless people converge on Lincoln Park in Pittsburg, KS for the annual 4th of July festivities. Fireworks, however, are not the only source of entertainment, nor the start of the night for festival goers. The festivities begin bright and early with several things going on. A classic car show, countless booths and concessions, and even live musical entertainment.

The car show alone draws countless people, all car lovers, to the festival to get a chance to see some classic works of automobile technology all gathered in one place. For those who do not enjoy checking out classic cars, there are other activities to entertain. There are enough booths selling anything from pictures to hats and other clothing accessories, such as sunglasses and wallets.

There are also several options for concessions offered for the festival goers. Everything from your common everyday snacks, like french fries and hamburgers, to things less common, such as shaved ice and large meat that is quite reminiscent of mutton from medieval times.

For those who do not want to walk around, there is a band shell with live music entertainment going on for most of the day. This year, the music entertainment concluded with a karaoke contest, where locals got a chance to get in front of the crowd and belt out some tunes. The winner Steve Brooks, has been singing off and on for 21 years as a member of the local band, Deuces Wild.

As the evening waned on, most people were eagerly awaiting the fireworks. Straight up at 10 PM, the fireworks began set to music that was being played on a local radio station. The display went off with only a few mistakes with a few fireworks going off too soon, a common error with fireworks displays. Since the display is triggered from a distance, though, no one was injured. Needless to say, by the end of the night, everyone was thrilled and exhausted from the festivities of the day.
