If you are about to join the local singles dating scene, there are certain advantages to your situation. You now have the freedom to go out and have fun without someone checking up on you or watching the clock until you get home. But once the initial excitement wears off, you may be uncomfortable in your single life. Here are five advantages of being single to keep in mind when you spend time alone pining for the comfort of a long-term relationship.

1. Spontaneity is your number one asset. You don't have to plan your social life or work trips around the needs of another person. Go where you want to go when you want to go there. Enjoy yourself while you make silly decisions. After all, right now you are the only person who has to live with the consequences of spontaneous decisions. You will surrender this freedom once you settle down into another committed relationship.

2. You can pick and choose what type of drama you will accept from potential dating partners. Once you have worked past negative emotions about past relationships, you are ready to protect yoruself emotionally from mind games that singles might try to play on you when you hit the dating circuit. Establish healthy boundaries while demanding that potential partners respect you as a person.

3. Focus on other relationships. While you were in a committed relationship you might have neglected other important relationships such as relations with your parents, siblings, and extended family. Use this time to visit your family and friends, including traveling for the holidays.

4. Save money for yourself. While you are single, you can save a lot of money by not going out on the weekends, especially when the mood doesn't strike you. You can also sit around in your pajamas all day and watch movies and no one will know. This year might be the year you save for that trip to Greece or Tahiti. Who is stopping you? What are you waiting for?

5. You can make huge life changes like moving or buying a home. Your situation is totally different. Without the fianncial security of a second income in your household, you need to make financial decisions that suit your present income. How about moving to take a better job or buying a home that you really want? Whether you decide to relocate or renovate your condo, you don't have to get anyone's permission to make a huge life change.

Being single is cool if you think about all of the advantages of making solo decisions. While you may not choose to spend life alone, you can enjoy the benefits of being able to make your own decisions about your time and your finances. Enjoy this freedom while you can!
