5 Advantages of Taking Online College Courses

The Best Things About Distance Education

K. Anderson
After being in college for three years, I have experienced courses both in the classroom and online. While I enjoy taking both, I have to say that I am a huge advocate and fan of online courses, which are also known as distance education courses. They offer several different advantages, 5 of which I would like to highlight:

1- Convenience

Online courses are very convenient for the simple fact that you don't have to drive somewhere to take them. You can literally sit in your pajamas as you complete your course, which saves a lot of time and energy.

2- Flexibility

Online courses are very flexible in that you can work on them whenever you want. Instead of having a set class time as you do in regular courses, you can do your online classes in the morning, afternoon, or even late at night. Most homework assignments for online courses are due on one set day every week, so you can complete them any day that you like.

3- Learn at Your Own Pace

When taking online courses, one of the biggest advantages is that you can learn at your pace. Instead of having to keep up with an instructor who lectures and expects you to retain information within minutes, you can sit and take all the time you need to learn the information for your courses. Some online courses come with DVDs that you can pause and rewind to hear what your instructor has to say if you didn't catch it the first time.

4- Wider Range of Courses Available

When you take online courses, you can take them from anywhere, so this broadens the number of courses that are available to you. While it is good to take online courses at your college, you can also take them at other colleges near you or even across the country. When I was in high school I took several online courses through the local community college, and even now that I am in college I still take some online courses at other schools.

5- Cost Less than Regular Classroom Courses

Another great advantage of online courses is that they have a lower cost than regular on-campus courses. In many cases, it is cheaper to follow an online curricula than an on-campus curricula. Community colleges also offer online courses for a great price, and many college students will take these courses over the summer.
