5 Agencies that Serve the Elderly

There are many agencies that can assist an elderly person in staying more independent as they grow older. Some of these agencies are available to all seniors, while others help based on income qualification. The services provided vary depending on the agency.

AARP.

Most people are familiar with the AARP. When a person things of the American Association of Retired Persons. The agency provides life insurance for those over 50. In addition, they provide health insurance options, wellness programs and discounts for certain items and services. However, one generally needs to be a member to receive benefits. A yearly fee is required for membership to AARP.

Council on Aging.

Most communities have a Council on Aging that is part of the National Council on Aging. Services provided depend on the specific agency. Services may include free noon time meals, activities for seniors, transportation services, and home aides. Their services are not income based. Check with your local Council on Aging to see which services they provide.

Community Action Agency.

Community Action Agencies are part of the Community Action Partnerships. They provide services to low income residents in a community. However, there income assistance is sometimes tiered based, allowing for some assistance with middle income individuals. Services that some agencies may provide for elderly persons are transportation services, exercise programs, Meals on Wheels programs, assistance paying for prescriptions, home weatherization assistance, and hep paying electrical bills. Not all agencies provide the same assistance.

Experience Works.

This program used to be called Green Thumb. The agency provides job training and employment for low income senior citizens. Experience Works generally places seniors in part time community jobs. The goal is to reduce poverty in the elderly by providing extra income assistance through part time employment.

Senior Corps.

Senior Corps was founded with the belief that seniors still desire to be active and contribute to society. Anyone over age 55 can volunteer. The agency matches senior citizens with their talents and skills and lets them volunteer in different match them with volunteer opportunities.Seniors have many opportunities to receive assistance and to be connected with people in their communities. Check some of these agencies out to help an elderly person you love.
