5 Alternative Uses for Ketchup

Lee Andrew Henderson
Ketchup is one of the most popular condiments. Who doesn't enjoy ketchup on their hamburger or hot dog or a heap of ketchup alongside their French fries? Believe it or not though, flavoring for your food is not the only good use of ketchup. There are a few other uses for ketchup that you might not be aware of.

Get Rid of Skunk Smell
One of the oldest tricks in the book is to get rid of the stench of a skunk by washing yourself with tomato juice. Do the math. Tomato juice is obviously a tomato product and so is ketchup. Ketchup has the same properties that make tomato juice good for washing skunk stench so one use of ketchup is to do the same thing. Also an added bonus is that most homes are more likely to have ketchup around the kitchen than tomato juices.

Soothe Children's Boo Boos
This use of ketchup is more psychological than it is scientific. Some people will save the small packets of ketchup they receive with fast food and keep them in the freezer. Then when one of their children gets a boo boo that needs to be soothed with coolness they tell the child to hold the frozen packet of ketchup on the boo. The cold from the frozen packet of ketchup will soothe the boo boo and when the child sees a packet of ketchup they have good thoughts of things like French fries and hot dogs and it takes their mind off of their injury.

Chlorine Hair
Sometimes the chlorine from a swimming pool can damage a swimmer's hair. Chlorine has been known to turn blond hair into a green color. To wash out this green coloring you can simply use ketchup as shampoo in the shower. Massage some ketchup into your wet hair the same way you would with shampoo and that green coloring will be gone in no time.

Brighten Silver
Any silver that has become dull can be fixed using ketchup. Whether it is silverware or jewelry you can simply dab a little ketchup on the dull areas and then use a toothbrush to get into any crevices. After a few minutes rinse the ketchup off and the silver will look better than ever.

Fake Blood
It doesn't matter whether you're a kid playing in the yard with a wild imagination, a teen pulling a prank on somebody or an aspiring filmmaker, another great use for ketchup is to use the packets as fake blood.
