5 Amazing Hikes Along the Coast of Canada

Beautiful Hikes in Beautiful Canada

J G Hodnette
Canada is a country known for its natural beauty and breathtaking coasts. As a country surrounded on three sides by oceans, there are a lot of coasts to choose from, each better than the last. Here is a list of five great trails worth considering if you want to hike in Canada.

1. East Coast Trail - In Newfoundland and Labrador, this mostly unknown Atlantic trail. This trail is 220 km (137 mi) of developed trail running from Fort Amherst south to Cappahayden. An additional 320 km (200 mi) is less developed and open to the public, but considered "under construction." The trail could be enjoyed for weeks and takes hikers through many small coastal towns and The Spout, a coastal geyser powered by wave movement. As a trail that goes through the eastern most part of Canada, it is a hike that you'll never forget.

2. Pukaskwa Coastal Trail - This 60 km (37 mi) trail goes along a coast, but not the coast of a sea. This trail in Pakaskwa Park goes along the coasts of the Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater lakes in the world. These bodies of water are so vast that they actually do feel like an ocean. The trail is rough but relatively short. A relaxed pace will take you seven days and bring you through ancient forests and the granite of the Canadian Shield.

3. North Coast Trail - At the northern tip of Vancouver Island in Cape Scott Provincial Park is this recently built trail. You can take a water taxi to the beginning and ending of the trail in order to try it in both directions. The trail is 61 km (37 mi) and take hikers through beaches and old growth forests. Deer, elk, black bears, otters, seals, and sea lions are common in this area and the trail is easy and short. Five nights will be plenty to finish the trail.

4. Juan de Fuca Marine Trail - At the southwester tip of Vancouver Island, this 47 km (30 mi) trail is one only recommended or serious hikers. The trail begins at Mystic Beach and ends at Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew. This trail can also be hiked in part, unlike most other trails, or hiked in full for about five to six nights. The forests are younger than other trails, but the rough terrain will be rewarding for serious hikers.

5. West Coast Trail - This internationally renowned, famous trail goes from Port Renfrew to Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This 77 km (48 mi) trail includes walking trails, cable cars, and even ladders. It is considered one of the best 10 trails in the entire world and besthike.com has named it #1 since 1999! It is open each year from the first of May to the end of September. Seven days will be a nice slow pace to enjoy yourself. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
