5 Annoying Video Game Sidekicks

Jennifer Amlie
In many video games, the main character is accompanied by a loyal friend or sidekick. Sometimes they can be extremely helpful. Other times they make you want to punch the TV because they're so annoying. Even with a stellar video game, an annoying sidekick can feel like the bane of your character's existence. Here's a look at five horribly annoying sidekicks from otherwise great video games.

Navi from Ocarina of Time
I find all the fairy sidekicks in the Zelda games hard to tolerate, but Navi is the worst. In a non-linear game like Zelda having a character constantly reminding you of what to do is annoying. She's suppose to get Link's attention to any clues, but her yelling "Hey! and "Listen!" is distracting, not useful. Even if you're trying to complete a task, she will chime in. Forget it if you can't figure out a puzzle on the first try. Her gabbing doesn't help you or your concentration.

Brucie in Grand Theft Auto IV
This steroid enhanced, fast cars loving, woman chaser is the most annoying thing in the game. He was once a "fat loser" that turned into a buff, overexcited egomaniac. He's loud, obnoxious and was constantly calling Niko to hang out. I would suffer through the required Brucie mission then never try to cross paths again with him. He's the only friendly character in GTA IV I would try to kill. Pushing him down some stairs is highly amusing.

The Adoring Fan in Oblivion
People dream of being famous and having adoring fans. In Oblivion, the adoring fan is almost stalker creepy. When you become the Grand Champion of the Arena, this Wood Elf follows you around. The adoring fan will come up with some of the most annoying phrases proclaiming how he can't believe he's with the Grand Champion. He'll run away from any battle, no matter how small. He won't enter caves, but he'll ask if you need a back rub or your boots shined.

The Dog in Duck Hunt
His only purpose is to point and laugh at you. No matter how many ducks you shot in a row, if you miss one he comes out of the grass and starts that annoying wheezing laugh. Who hasn't played Duck Hunt and tried in vain to shoot that dog?

Peter Puppyin Earthworm Jim
One of Jim's sidekicks, Peter Puppy, tried players' patience with his escort missions. Peter's a friendly fellow, but make him mad and he'll transform into a monster that rivals the Hulk. When Jim made a mistake, Peter would take his aggression out on him. The puppy rescue missions in Earthworm Jim 2 turned Jim's loyal friend into a killing machine if you dropped too many puppies as they bounced to safety. You can't help rescue puppies if your "friend" beats the life out of the main character.

HA! Knowing you being a Zelda fan, the moment I saw the title I was like "Navi! Navi!!"

Haha. I thought Brucie was funny but I can see how he would be annoying. Good list.

I second the suggestion of Issun from Okami. He came very close to single-handedly ruining an otherwise amazing game.

Seriously, no Slippy the Toad?! That god awful character was the most annoying sidekick I've ever encountered in video games.

Issun from Okami is more annoying than any video game sidekick I can think of.

At times, Elena and Sully are annoying in Uncharted 1 and 2, but they end up earning their keeps :)
