1. Decide on a domain name. The domain name is what people who want to visit your website will type into a web browser. You'll want to choose a name that people can easily remember. A domain name contains up to 67 characters and can include letters, numbers, and hyphens. Think of this domain name as your company brand - something that represents your business.
2. Design your website. If you're familiar with website design, then this should be pretty easy to do. If you don't have the time or inclination to learn website design, there are many companies that offer this service. There are also freelance designers who can create a website within your budget. However, if you are on a very tight budget, it's possible to hire student designers who are willing to create your website for free just so they can have something in their portfolio.
3. Set up a hosting account. A hosting provider is a company that rents out web space and bandwith to people who want to start an online business or publish a website to the internet. There are many hosting providers out there and usually you'll pay a monthly fee for their services. Fees can range anywhere from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars depending on the features and bandwith you'll need for your online business. You may want to consult with your website designer to see what types of features and how much bandwith you'll need to make your website run smoothly.
4. Set up a payment gateway to accept online payments. Payment gateways, otherwise known as payment processors, is a system used to authorize payments for online businesses. Visitors to your website can pay for their purchases with their credit/debit card or e-check via a payment gateway. Payment gateways are important because they help manage transactions and prevent against fraud.
5. Create or buy content for your website. Most people search the internet for information before making purchases, so it's important to have useful, unique, and valuable content on your website. You can write your own content or hire a professional writer to create content for you.
As you can see, starting an online business is a simple process once you get the basics down. Now it's just a matter of going out and taking action!
