Tongue rings. These are probably the least classy piercing that any man, woman or child could ever possess. For a while back in the 1990s and early 2000s, tongue rings were a sort of fad for the punk and goth scenes. But when everyone and their grandma started getting them, they began to lose their edgy "charm." A running assumption about guys and ladies with tongue rings is that they tend to have some similarities with the town bicycle - if you get what I mean.
Hair extensions. I never understood what purpose hair extensions held. The cheap ones - and therefore, the one we see the most often - aren't fooling anybody. Nobody believes that your hair is down to your butt (think about how long that actually takes to achieve - years). What's even worse is when a woman's hair is dyed and then the extensions are put in to "match." Ladies, let me tell you: it never matches. There's more pride in having healthy hair of your own than cruddy extensions. Did I mention that using them too much damages your hair? Hair-food for thought.
Press-on nails. There was a time back in the 90s where press-on nails were cool - what's better and easier than sticking on long fingernails and painting them to your liking? Well, painting your own nails for starters. To my horror, I have been noticing that the press-on nail has crept its way out of my childhood nightmares (where it belongs) and back onto the hands of my peers. Come on, girls! It tends not to be a cute look when you're on a date and your pinky-nail drops into your dinner. It's like a bad romantic comedy, sans the comedy. Now, I'm all for some enhancements here and there, but there are simply too many ways that these suckers can go wrong.
Over-plucking. A personal pet peeve, this has been going on for years. Rather than never coming back, I wish this could be permanently benched. Many women who over-pluck do so out of boredom or anxiety which is unfortunate (think of it as a nervous habit like nail-biting), but the effect is horrendous. If you don't trust yourself to do your own plucking, enlist the help of a professional. Most manicurists and salons will offer eyebrow service - waxing, plucking and threading - for a very small fee. Once this is done, if becomes much easier to keep up on your own. If you can spare the $5, please go for it. A look of continual surprise etched onto your face with your eyebrows should never be an option.
Two-toned hair. This is a fairly recent trend, though thankfully it has died down quite a bit in the past several months. Let's hope it stays this way. You may be wondering what I mean by two-toned hair. Here is the simplest way to describe this: imagine dividing your hair into two sections - a top half and the bottom half. Keep the top half your natural color, or dye it the color of your choice. The bottom half, dye black or some other strongly contrasting shade. What?! Who does this?! Yes. That was my reaction, too.
Let's keep these on the bench for years to come, folks.
