5 Best Coffees to Buy at the Supermarket

Best Coffees at Ralph's Supermarket

Loraine Alkire
Grocery store coffee has come a long way in the last decade. There was a time when your choices were something like, Yuban, Folgers and Maxwell house. But now- hold on to your seats: I counted 29 kinds of coffee at my local Ralph's Grocery. They carried Illy, Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts coffees.

I'll give you a brief history on my coffee preferences. For a time I was making cold pressed coffee. It's lower in acid. My stomach and doctor appreciate that. A ½ gallon jug of this cold filtered elixir requires 1 pound of coffee to prepare it. This ends up being pretty expensive when the ratio of coffee to water reconstituted is ¼ cup. It makes it ridiculously expensive the way I serve it. I use a 1:1 ratio of coffee and water, strong enough to make a cat bark with a healthy (or unhealthy) amount of cream and just a sip of sugar. So it's fair to say I like my coffee rich, smooth and robust.

Here are the five best coffees at my Grocery Store according to me, including anything from espresso to something that could pass for espresso.

1) Illy Espresso Coffee -- you can get an (8.8oz) can for about 13.00 dollars.

There is nothing else as good as this coffee to me. It makes a wonderful espresso with a rich head and not a bad cup of coffee either. I love Italian coffee and even though illy coffee is expensive and I rarely buy it- this is my favorite

2) Peet's Espresso Coffee costs about 10 dollars for 12oz can. This is good coffee and the price is less horrible but I still don't buy it that often because of the price.

3) Ralph's Brand Espresso Coffee. It's only 6.95 for a 10oz bag. This is what I call my, "This ain't too bad coffee" and the price is certainly right.

4) Starbuck's House Blend, a 12oz bag is about 11.00 dollars. I hold this second only to illy in taste and the price is about the same- all things considered if there's no illy and I can afford it and I'm treating myself, I'll buy this.

5) Chock Full O' Nuts Coffee is just 4.49 for a 13oz can -Such a Deal! This is the corner diner cup of joe; nothing to write home about. But when times are tough (and they are) nothing beats Chock Full O' Nuts Coffee's price.

Not a coffee drinker either. Good style, though.

Love this review. Yes Illy makes a great coffee. Chock full o' nuts is good but by using a good cone filter (Melitta) heat the water and pour it into the filter and let it drip. Not sure why this is different than the coffee machines but it has a totally different taste and aroma.

Illy Espresso Coffee is my favorite also. I worked as a barista at Starbucks for many years, but they never converted me. Sadly, the price is prohibitive, but I still splurge on occasion.

My husband is a huge coffee fan. I'll have to get him to try one of these since he hasn't found a brand he really loves yet.
