You Will Never Put Your Droid Down Using These Apps

JC Torpey
Android, Google's Open Source mobile OS, is one of the most popular mobile platforms today. There are several "Flavors" of Android on the market, the two most popular are Eclair and Cupcake. Cute names for such a powerful platform. Android is either on your smartphone or will be soon (either that you will be signing Apple's "Give your first born to Apple" pledge) as more and more smartphones are released with it. So then, what about Apps? Well, there is plenty of App goodness to sample in the world of Android Apps and these are just a few of the sweetest.

Quickpedia

If you are anything like me, you are saving up your pennies for a second monitor just so you can keep Wikipedia open permanently. The Quickpedia app for Android brings your obsession right on to your Android mobile device. You can search with its Google like text predictor and type only one letter of what you are searching for. the app also allows you to save text from article pages, randomize pages if your bored (as if! on an Android) and much more. Sweetest of all, the App is free! It is from NextMobile and you can get it at CNet.com's Quickpedia download page.

Astro File Manager

The Astro File manager is a free file manager add-on for Android that adds a bag full of yummy functions that you will never again live without. Real file management with quick features like attachment handling, create and extract .zip files and data backup and restore functions for all publicly held apps. It also allows compatibility and handling of all image, text and HTML files, too, for those multi-level browser and smartphone users. This is critical, as you want to have an easy way to insure that your data is safe. Of course, it is a free app. Head on over to AndroidFreeware.com and download a copy, it is yours.

WaveSecure

Security is job number one these days, what with all the bad people on the internet, huh? Well you would not want to be running a device connected to the internet without adequate security would you? I did not think so. WaveSecure is what you need, because it can protect your phone in case of theft, which is one of its best features. The other is if you uninstall part of the app without the other, it will lock the phone. The app treats the uninstall as an intrusion and protects it from possible thieves. Moreover, it is free. Keep in mind that this is new and still in beta so there may be a cost when it is officially released but you can snag it now from WaveSecure.com free.

JiWire

There is nothing like being on the road and having to stand with your smartphone held high looking for a connection like a lost puppy. In cases such as this, you need to get JiWire. This little sweet app allows you to find wireless hot spots. Well, that is not the real trick; it comes with a database of over 285,000 hotspots in 139 different countries. You will never again be out of touch with your fellow twits, or tweets. You can plan your access on the go and the app will update its database with new hotspots as they come online. Surf to JiWire.com and leave your credit card at home, its free.

Ultimate Faves

We all know what favorites are, right? Well the Ultimate Faves app for Android takes the concept to a new level for Android devices by organizing all your recently used objects such as Contacts, Apps, oh and web bookmarks too. You can program Faves to track your faces (the organized files on your home screen) as well as tapping your device to initiate the program. Head on down to Lazy Cletus's .... Opps! Go to AndroidFreeware.com and download yourself a copy. Downloader beware: The Company will not allow you to pay money for the app so do not even try.

There are so very many different Android Apps you can sprinkle on top of your Cupcake or Éclair phones. You can try Getjar.com, which offers just about any app you could want for your Android phone, or any phone for that matter. Just log on, enter your phone make an model and it will show you all the apps that are ready and waiting for downloading to your smartphone.
