1. Mentawai Islands, Indonesia
This island chain of wave rich ocean is off the western coast of Sumatra. The winds are powerful here and blow in all directions, making for some really huge waves. If you're looking for the greatest waves, then you need to take a boat or ferry out to where the good ones are. Surfers tend to pay about $125 a day for these great waves, though, so bring your debit card.
2. Gold Coast, Australia
Definitely considered one of the greatest surf spots in the world, Gold Coast has great waves, great beaches, and great people. All of these things make for a fantastic surfing experience. It is expensive and considered a tourist trap by many, but this area of Australia has some of the greatest waves you've ever seen, so it may be well worth the crowds and price.
3. Fuerteventura, Spain
Part of the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa, this is one of the nicest surfing spots around. Lined up at the same latitude as Florida and Mexico, the temperature of the water here stays pretty nice year round. October to March is the peak season for this surf spot.
4. California, North America
Known around the world for their great surf spots and sunny weather, everyone agrees that California has some great surfing. Try out Malibu or Steamer lane if you want some good sizes swells. Despite the warm sun, the water is very cold almost all year round so bring a wet suit--also it can get pretty crowded during the good season, so be prepared for that.
5. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa
If we're talking about excellent surf spots, then there is no way we can skip over South Africa. This great spot, about an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth, is definitely one of the most famous surfing spots in the world. The peak times of the year are June, July, and August (their winter). Check out the beach Boneyards or Magna Tubes while there. Big surfing competitions also happen, so you may want to go just to watch.
These are just five of the countless amazing surf spots around the world. Find your own personal favorite, but don't let anyone but your closest friends know about it, or it'll soon be over run by tourists!
